Question about miniature painting.

Well i was wondering if anyone has had a similarly crazy idea or any experience with this. My thought was to use something like play doh or some type of moldable clay to isolate features when i paint. I mean i know cleaning it out of grooves would be tricky but with raised features it could be useful.

Does anyone know about any good articles on painting camoflauge patterns on model vehicles?

Blue Tac (the stuff you use to hang up posters on your wall) is used by professional airbrush users. I have used it before too for brush painting. It goes on nice and comes off clean.

Any brand will do, I use stuff from the Dollar store without problems.

I'll second the blu tac. I use it for masking off areas and for holding the mini's to a surface when painting.

I use masking tape to mask areas when I spray paint.
It's cheap and clean.

I tried silly putty and it didn't work for me, I found it s=didn't stick enough to the model (however it stuck fine to the carpet in my car after my son dropped it and left it there

)

A little side question about blue tack because im reading about something old called "sprue stretching" how is blue tack for a molding applications? or am i just being nuts?

Useless unless maybe a sealant. It doesn't hold much detail and isn't hard.

Blue tack is no good as a sculpting medium. You're definitely reaching into the past if you're reading about sprue stretching.

It's not clear to me, John--do you have any miniatures or modelling experience?

Reason i was asking about sprue stretching is im reading up on miniature painting and building and i'm trying to evolve myself. I tried to get a hold of that sheperd paine book but no luck. I'm hoping to pick up a few useful things in the process.I have done a few airplane models when i was younger but i realize i probably did them like a god d*mn 3 year old looking back.
