I was thinking about that a lot while I was painting her. And she took a good while to paint, so I had a little too much time to think:
She's definitely riding this turtle while both are underwater- her hair is floating behind her rather than falling flat against her (as it would were she to emerge).
That means that she's the sort of fairy who can play a flute underwater. While she hasn't evolved gills for such things (such as the Humming Fish made famous by Doctor Seus) she clearly has a flute that can play music underwater.
Such things have been seen before. Sebastian had a whole orchestra fish that could play a number of woodwind instruments. Now, sound waves can travel well through water, and...
... Anyway I had someone ask me for a before picture, so I went and found one online. One note, some of the base had a huge hole in it (it didn't show up in the bronze version, but there was a large section of seaweed that was just a mess of miscast resin) so I did a bit of sculpting there.
