Location info idea
So since there is no way to make people enter their real world location and international shipping is becoming cost-prohibitive I've been trying to figure out a way to see where people are from more easily before I waste time with negotiations.
***I would like to propose that when you leave feedback for a trade you first list the traders location and then your feedback.***
Since I always check refs before I trade anyway having that info right there would be ideal. And even if only some people did it eventually there should be some refs in peoples lists that will have their location listed. I know it isn't perfect but it's better than nothing. If anybody would like to join me in my new endeavor please feel free. I think it could help the community and make things more efficient for us all. Thanks, Jay

Re: Location info idea
Just looked at my references. What is row ID?? Seems to me this column could be dumped for location. When filling out a trade reference you have to put location so why not display it.
I also would like to re-suggest making location required when registering as a member here. While it wont work for old members it will work for the newbies.

Re: Location info idea
I know if people took a minute to input their location I'm more likely to trade with them.
If I see an ad posted I want to respond to and they don't have their location in I just skip sending a message and move onto the next one.
No one on Bartertown is trying to trade a one of a kind item that I can't get anywhere else, so I won't spend the time to even find out where they are.

I am happy to send first if your rating and references warrant that.

If your in the US I simply state in my ads only looking for US trades. I might consider Canadian, but overall I just prefer stating flat out US only.

Re: Location info idea
It IS on the Mechanic's to-do list to make Location a Mandatory Field while signing up.
Jason... Row ID is something that the reference database uses to list where any given reference is stored. Admin Staff appreciates that info, which is why it is there..

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.
If you don't have your Location listed in your User Control Panel, why not take a second and update it? It will let your trading partners know where you are from the beginning.
I use the Unofficial Porkuslime Trading Guidelines - if you have way less refs.. you ship first.

So if its something the ADMIN use, could it be 'hidden' from everyone else in favor of location?porkuslime wrote:

Re: Location info idea
Did some change to References go through? When I try to post a reference it requires me to enter a location now and I don't remember that previously.

Re: Location info idea
Aha. Can you set it to default to 'Select a State' or something for state? Otherwise you're going to have a lot of folks from Alabama.Plarz wrote:Yes, this is a new requirement.

edit: Also, I suspect a lot of people aren't paying attention and walking away after hitting the 'Yes' and not seeing the message. Can we get the 'location required' thing to pop up after the first submit? (Like it does if you try to do it without putting in a username or something)
Also, a red asterisk next to Location would be nice too.
edit2: Oh, apparently you can hit submit and then yes for any missing field except username. Interesting.
