washing before drybrunshing/blending or not ?

Post by meecham63 »

Hi guys, I am painting tyranids and i would like to have your opinion concerning painting. I am not an advertised painter, and I would to know the steps you follow : do you apply your washes before drybrushing, or inverse ?

thanks for your help !

I think you'll find as many responses as you will responders.
Many people don't wash. Others don't drybrush.
Myself, it's totally situational. I occasionally drybrush and, if I am also using a wash, I wash it after. If I think I lost too much highlighting, though, I'll highlight or drybrush again, after.

It depends on what you are wanting to do with your wash. I tend to do it last as I don't like the really start highlights (aka GW Painting Style) and the wash helps blend the colors together more. That said, a lot of people wash first and then do a two step highlight (heavy with base color and then lighter with the highlight).

ŧhank you guys, I paint tyranids, and for the flesh I use bleached bone. I just wash to give details to the fig. If I dry brush before washing, the drybrushing will still be apparent, or it will desapear, that was the purpose of my question

How close is the color between your baseline and your drybrush? Honestly, for Bleach Bone if you are going for a tabletop quality, I would wash with a brown wash (Devlan Mud or its equivalent) and then drybrush back with the bleached bone.
