Paint mixing help?

Post by Alzarakh »

Hi all, So I'm trying to learn how to mix GW paints so I can replicate the paint style of a wraith that I bought off of ebay a few weeks ago.

Basically from what I can tell, primed black. Then they layered up to skull white using blues. But I cant for the life of me mix the colours right. The colours I mix are all coming out too blue and not light enough.

Pic:
The one I'm painting is on the left. I can't get the colours light enough.

Colours I own:
Regal Blue
Ultramarines Blue
Ice Blue
Skull White

(I have more but that's it for blue)

So far I've tried to layer up by mixing 2:1 of the darker (regal blue), then 1:1 then 1:2 and so on up to a ice blue/skull white mix. This is my second attempt and I don't want to have to start from scratch again. So I wanted to post here before I keep going.

In the pic I've only gotten to a 1:1 regal blue and ultramarines.

I think he may have mixed in a bit of grey. :-|

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also I'm in the middle of moving so buying new paint will have to wait until I'm settled again :'(

I think he layered up to white using something like Space Wolves grey rather than blues and white.

yepr harlequin is correct, they started with a base of grey (space wolves or codex grey) to start them lightened the highlights out to white. The white is going to retain that blue tint otherwise.

Okay, thanks for the responses. I'll take a look through my paints, I think I have space wolves grey. I'll give it a try and see how it works out.

you can buy reuglar grey primer. Test it on scraps to see how dark it is. If it's too dark, spray it from a further distance away. if it's too light, just use lighter colors over it.

also, strip it before you reprime it, if you primed it black.
