Planning to pick up some Necrons, and want to go with an almost obsidian look to them. Here's what I'm thinking of doing, just looking for tips on folks who might have already done something similar. Color scheme will be sort-of obsidian w/ standard bright green for highlights (eyes).
I'm looking at going with a white primer coat. Next coat the model with Scorpion green. Then start Badab Black (or similar) washes, going with coat after coat until the skin tone is almost black. Anyone tried something like this? What kind of results did you get?

Hi,
looks to me, it would be simplier and faster to go from black undercoat and then do multiple glazes of green. this way you are giving a green effect to the black paint rather than shading green with black

I don't think this will work the way you want.
First: You should probably primer it black. That will take care of anything that you miss, as far as making it blend in with the obsidian look.
Second (and most importantly): Badab Black really darkens your colors. If you put a few layers of BB on a green model, you're not going to retail the green like you want, I think.
I would suggest that you find some necrons in poor condition that you can buy cheaply (I remember seeing an ad last night that would suit this perfectly). Then, use those as guinea pigs to test your scheme.

ive tried obsidian a couple different ways and washes never gave me a "stone" look like i wanted them to. I got my best results from a base of black, a large highlight of my base pigmenting color highly watered down(in this case a bright green) and then worked my way back to black mixing a very dark grey in a little bit at a time each highlight and finishing it all off with a 50/50 yellow/black glaze to tie all of it together and give it that mirror shine

Obsidian is a true black and glossy almost...
I find Chaos Black is not a true black and an ex-coworker showed me something he called Boot Black that made a truer black IMHO.
Mix Chaos Black and Rotting Flesh in a 16:1 ratio. I would recommend some form of gloss on top of that.
