Being Contacted at home?

Post by David Phillips »

Hello all,

is it just me or has anyone else been contacted via email about items being put up on B-town with out asking for this information? I know in one case it was from someone I did a trade with some time ago but I've had two recently that I've never delt with.

Is this a new thing? If it is I'm not overly happy.

Is it possibly something you have an ancient post sitting around for?

Otherwise, I know I'd not appreciate it either. Needs to be directly related to a post I have made, or responded to, or a chat conversation.

I'd ask the mods to investiagte.

Okay... your post was a bit vague, so forgive me if I got the wrong idea.

After reading it a couple times, I presume that you mean someone's emailed YOU about something THEY posted.

Assuming that is correct;

I have mixed emotions about it.

On one hand, it's kind of presumptuous of them to email you about it without you showing any interest to it directly. Perhaps a bit insensitive, as well.

On the other hand, I see it as a good marketing strategy (assuming it is something that they have witnessed you taking interest in at some point in the past). Not to mention that it is not THAT much of a hassle to read a 2 minute email, then hit delete.

I'd say that you shouldn't get overly upsaet about it YET (IMO, of course). I'd email the person that I am not interested and request that they not initiate any contact with me in the future about anything that I have neither posted, nor requested information on.
Further emails, though, would be met with EXTREME prejudice.

Of course, that is just one opinion and, granted, they will vary.

Sorry if I was unclear.

MagickalMemories hit it on the head. I was emailed by a person about an object that they were looking for/posted on B-town without me asking for any info.

I'm not angry persay, just preplexed by the whole thing.

Example (from today). 1 year of free webhosting if I can provide a painted Warmachine army (don't even play Warmachine).

Another one was a fella trying to sell me various Dark Angel figures. This one I at least understood since I had inquired about a Land Raider a month earlier but we could not come to agreement since he was unwilling to do a simo ship.

Something like this happend earlier where a person contacted me out of the blue and and asked if I had any armies to trade for one he had up on B-town.

I don't know. I find the whole thing odd. I'm mainly looking to see if this is becoming a common occurence or is this only happening to me?

truthfully i would steer clear from these types, first of all i would think they are trying to bypass and hope you dont check thier info out or b town or dont have an account or something unscroupulous. and they could have pm'd you in the first place.

i personally get nasty with most that email me at times because when i get nasty with them is when they have been searching archives for month or better old posts or sponging off other posts i have replied to. pisses me off.

when i know its from a legitimate post then i am fine with it but when its from something like your talking about i get pissy. and i know who i have traded with and who i havent. most people know who they have dealt with in the past. and those are fine for one off emails for anything from offers to info for whatever reasons.

but i doubt there is really anything in the rules to cover this, i think its just part of being on an online forum, but if you do contact adam, lin or someone else i would keep a tally of the emails and other pertinate info. because if it is a habitual problem with other members then there is a legitimate gripe. if its just isolated then oh well.

my 2-3 cents

I noticed I recieved a couple myself for things that I might actually have been interested, in, but passed on (and didn't reply) because I don't have the funds atm.

I also thought that it might've been a new way of farming emails :/ post something like that to every email addy they can find in the dbase, wait for replies, and zing - Instant mailing list.

Okay, David...

Someone offering you Web Hosting if you have a WARMACHINE army... that's just ridiculous. Especially, when you have obviously NOT posted anything WM.

I don't think those are becoming common. Your is the first I've heard of it.

However, I can't say that I see what Orcdom is referring to as being necessarily bad.
I've done it myself before.

If I see you post that you are interested in something that someone else has, and I have it too, I might just email you.

I'd be polite... "Sorry if this is intrusive... I hope this doesn't come across as a bothersome email."
Stuff like that... but, I can't fault the reasoning at all.

Just IMO, of course.

its completely aggrivating when i havent posted a add in a month or 2 and then get emails about, "hey you still got this fig" or "ill give you XXX for your XXX" and i didnt have or want either, or where i replied to a post with a list and they email me asking about something that wasnt on my list or even had anything to do with the post.

i guess i dont have a tolerance for stupid people.

and if its some one stating they saw a a reply i posted in the first part of the email then i am fine with it. or even mentioning that its off an old post.

dont email me asking about figs i dont have or didnt even have listed and start the conversation "hey dude" or dont treat it like i just posted it that day.

If your old ad isn't updated to reflect that you no longer have x item available, I see no harm in someone contacting you a month, 2 months, even 3 months down the road to ask politely if you still have the item.

How are they supposed to know? I don't think that warrants calling them stupid.

Aside from that sometimes people just make mistakes. If something this trivial really pisses you off so much that you starting shouting names at random people, I suggest you rethink your time spent on the forums.

Perhaps you're not thick-skinned enough for interaction with other people.

maybe i aint, but it should be considered that if a trade post rolls to the second page and is not reposted it should be considered gone.

because if it hasnt been reposted then there must be a reason.
and i thought the intention of posting only once a week was not just to keep people from reposting the same add but was also give time to ads posted to roll off to the second page.

like i said if they were polite about it, thats one thing.

Well, I can understand your ooinion. I'm not sure if I agree or not on the first part ("Do you still have XXX"), but I am whole-heartedly with you on the part about items not even on your list.

And... umm... I could easily see myself starting an email with "Hey, Dude." Even with someone I don't know. BTown is a laid back kind of place. So, I can't fault someone for that.

thats the reason i update all of my ads with NOT CURRENT and refer people to my sig, which always has a link to my most current ad...

and along that same 'people make mistakes' line, I've recieved a good half dozen or so PMs with information about trades that I wasn't running, I was interested in! I would send the poster an email and reply mentioning I'd sent an email, and get a couple of PMs asking what I wanted for xxx item that I didn't have and in fact wanted for myself! :o

I sometimes find calling and talking is easier then typing out a trade sometimes and faster. You get a better feeling about the deal and it's always nice to hear a voice. I do find when you are hired to do a painting or terrain job it's alwasy nice to hear what the person really wants rather then typing it. I have asked to call or be called and only have had a couple people say " no thanks feel wierd or not comfortable. No problems I can understand. I say do your homework on the trader or hired person and most peoples feedback with speak for itself. I have only had a few problems on here My biggest is people who flake out on deals after they have made the dela dn say they are sending the item soon. Then you wait and nothing. I've had ths happena few times. Anyway THanks just my 2 cents
