PvP is a part of any online game, but I've found you can avoid PvP in EVE a lot better than in WoW.

well, WoW has non-pvp servers. but I just don't like the way the game plays. I joined and left 2x.

I've played about every game out there..except swg and a couple of the new 'free' ones.

eve looks like another space game that came and died.. space and beyond or earth and beyond or such. [the name was similiar to the defunct tv series.]
it was all pve except for the arenas.

even reading where the eve devs don't care much about griefing through me abit.

hey, if you enjoy it, have fun. i'm not downing the game, just not gonna try it.
Heh, I was called a Grognard. ;-)

Well, griefing in EvE isn't nearly as easy as other mmo's. EvE 'safe' zones have police that protect you (city guard type of thing). Really, if you play smart, you will likely never get killed in pvp if you are sticking to pve. There are certain rules of the game that if you break allow others to kill you in safe zones, you just need to not break those rules, one of which is stealing from another persons belongings in space. Basically apart from suicide ganking (which unless you are transporting something WAY to valuable in something way to flimsy isn't going to happen) there isn't much apart from bad decisions that will get you killed in those safe zones.

If you stick to a newb corp, you don't even have to worry about War Dec's on your corp. But as War Decs cost money, you likely won't even have that hit you if you are in a small corp that doesn't go around spouting off. So while no place except never undocking is truely 100% safe, it's not a gank fest by any means.

I have friends that have played for quite awhile that have never been in a pvp fight, they enjoy running missions (raids) and stuff like that with the members of their corp.

Not trying to change any minds, just discussing.

More like comparing stepping in some melted snow to surfing The Spit in Australia.

I started playing back in october and love the game. I never played wow or any of the others so i cant compare it to them but I love the complexity of the game.

How the heck did this happen... I left bartertown for eve, last I asked no one here had heard of it.

Ironhide, you have an incoming PM. I've been playing a year, I would very much like to get in touch with you on TQ.

Fly safe, and happy hunting IH. :-D

So if the old Privateer and Freelancer games are my favorite PC games of all time how would EVE be for me?

I've always hoped those franchises would really get resurrected, but the closest thing I know of is the Galaxy on Fire series for my iPhone. It isn't bad, but it's not great.

As I never played either of those games I can not answer that question for you, but if you are interested send me a PM and I will set you up with a 3 week trial for free. The advantage to this trial over others that I have heard about is if you like it once you pay you just pick up where you left off so everything you did you dont have to do over.

Sorry, but if I do try and eventually sign up, it's going to be my fellow staffer reaping the benefits.

That said, I won't be trying anything unless someone can give me an informed answer regarding my question.

EVE is like a MMOG of Privateer in my opinion. Freelancer I didn't play. You can get a free trail of the game for 14 days or I could send you a 21-day free trail.

Is there good, real-time, space fighter dog-fighting? PvE dog fights or PvP only? Is it smooth? Lots 'o lag?

In order:
Yes, but not from a cockpit view.
Yes to both.
If you a have a somewhat decent computer it is smooth.
Lag occurs only when you get involved in large engagements or there are too many people in the same area.

PvP/PvE fighting can be solo, gang, or huge fleet battles. You can be a pirate, miner, missioner, explorer, etc. And depending on how you train your skills, you can be all of them. Skills are not increased thru experience. They are time-based; meaning it takes X amount of time to learn X levels of a certain skill. You start the game with certain skills and must buy skillbooks to learn new ones.

To get an idea of what a PvP battle looks like, see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAAczC7PPIo
