Kusarigama bits for Ninja Maneater conversion

Post by GnomesofZurich »

I have an Ogre Kingdoms Ninja Maneater coming in the mail that I'm hoping to convert to be wielding a kusarigama (sickle and chain) weapon rather than the swords it comes with. However, I'm having difficulty finding either a bit or another miniature with such a weapon of an appropriate scale to use in the conversion. If anyone is aware of where I might get such a thing (with a link), I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

For the chain, I'd suggest cheap jewelers chain. Or possibly the chain bits from CSM vehicles.

For the blade, you'll probably have to make one. There are/were ninja minis from back in the 80's & 90's that had some, but the scale might be off and the price not worth it for just the blade.
Heh, I was called a Grognard. ;-)

Reaper makes a nice chain pack, too. Metal and bendable, and there is quite a bit in there.

For the sickle, there is a GW skink hero holding one, but not sure if it would work for your needs.

Good luck - sounds like a good conversion when it is done!

Thanks. I'm a novice at conversions, so anything that simplifies it (like the chain pack you pointed out) helps. I'll take a look at the skink as well.

Edit: I found the skink you mentioned, but the sickle is definitely more European-Occidental than Oriental. For reference, here is the sort of sickle I'm looking for: kusarigama

Dragonforge sells actual chain. Perfect size for modelling.
I bought 2' of it on my last order!

for a Ogre.. you could probably get away with the plastic top of a Scythe from the zombie sprue.. it may still be a bit to big but would be easy to cut down being plastic.. and i agree with both above suggestions for chain.. Dragonforge modeling chain is great and the reaper chain pack, that i prefer for things like this.. is awesome as its solid and bends pretty easily .. but don't try to use it if you are planning to loop the chain and or wrap it around the model the modelers chain is better for that!

Essentially a Kusarigama's head looks a lot like a knife turned sideways on the top of a short spear. So, I think it's as easy as getting yourself a spear and a largish knife. (The knife would need to be a little on the big side since we are talking about ogres after all.) Cut the blade off the handle of the knife and the tip off the spear. Then stick the knife blade on the end of the spear sideways. Oh, and then cut the end of the spear off just a smidge below the hand and attach the chain. I don't think it would be that hard.

That's a good way of looking at it. Thanks for the ideas. The figure hasn't arrived yet, and even when it does I'll need to get suitable parts for the conversion (also by mail order since there are no hobby stores here and no roads), but when I get it done I'll post pictures.
