Advice on OOP/Lmt Ed GW Minis...

Post by Oldskool »

I have a couple Limited Edition GW figs I was thinking of selling before Xmas for some extra cash. However I have a little conundrum.
I am an "above average" painter and am trying to decide if painting these would make them worth more or less $$.

For example, I have a Sgt Centurius that I actually modified with a diff chainsword hand (the one that comes with it is very out of scale with the rest of him, I do have the original arm and the new one is simply pinned on so there is no perm damage or changes made to the mini) and it has never been painted or based. I was going to paint it up to a very high standard and put it up on Ebay but then I looked and saw a few up there already but NONE were painted.
So I guess I am just looking for input, assuming that one can paint well enough to ADD to the value of a given mini, in the case of rare minis, are they usually worth more or less painted and based?

I would not paint or modify them if you were trying for a collector buy.

In all but the rarest cases, doing anything (even assembly) to an LE mini actually decreases the value. YMMV.

Well, with Centurious, you've essentially ruined his collectable value. Though you tried, you didn't improve him. Not in that senns. You actually made him worse.
For him, if you can paint to that high of a standard, I'd paint him and put him up. Even if he doesn't get hist for being Centurious, he can still be an effective proxy.

For any other LE models you have, I STRONGLY suggest leaving them untouched, if it is your intent to sell them.

I would also suggest not even removing them from any packaging they might have come in. If you plan to resell it, dont even open it.

I would say that most if not all collectors are very closed minded as to any alteration of a miniature. I collect Necromunda and have a very complete collection. They are all painted by me and have a very homogeneous look to the collection. Any painting you do will be stripped in the chem baths, because I want my collection to all have that "norseman" look. Now lets say you have one of the Ultra rare Kal Jerico's that go for about a grand a pop, you painted him and gave him a new BETTER gun. He would be worthless to my collection as he is not complete and not "THAT" model that I need now to complete my collection he is now a conversion. Yeah I would take him for $50 but hey I sure as heck wont be forking over a grand.

Prices for collecting pieces differs largely. On the collector market, the pieces themselves are different, i suggest you get a look at the collecting citadel miniatures page, so you will have a good idea of what is sought after and it is not generally what the common players consider rare (i.e. GD models are not rare or limited, Unreleased Ad. Mech Tracked platforms are).
in the general manner, paying twice the retail price for a NIB GD models- and the like is overpriced. a good range for NIB models of the like is 35-65, depending on the availability at the time of the sale or the oops factor (remember the wolfpriest increased suddenly with the SW codex release).
As said on the other post, modifying a limited release model kills its value, opening the blister kills its value as well.
Also as strange as it might be, the 'collector price' is way more in Europe than the USA. As for example, i had 3 sets of the Ad. Mech. skullz models, i sold one in Canada for 120$, the other in Europe for 300$, it might not be a perfect example.
The best in your case would be to give it value that is in between... i personnaly paid less that 5$ for mine back at the Apocalypse 100 event

As for Kal Jericho:
talking about the BL one: http://www.solegends.com/citle/citle200 ... G_8602.jpg ?
you can find it in UK for 100$ around http://cgi.ebay.com/Limited-Edition-Bla ... 588967078e

otherwise the once limited release from GW is now available on their website...at 35$

Cheers

I'll sell you one for $500... half price!
:-D
Always ship with delivery confirmation, I do the same.

Rating of less than 100 (or with no known traders)? You ship first (for trades and purchases), otherwise, we can ship simultaneously.

YOU must ship your package; not your wife, friend, lover, cousin, or dog. If you are not able to ship packages yourself, then please don't work out a deal with me.

Why?
If you've got the LE one that commands those kinds of funds, why not sell it on feebay for double!?

Capitalism at it's finest. : )
