Re: Underhanded at Bartertown Again
For most Items, I don't want to start a bidding war. Trader A Offers me X first. Trader B offers me X+1. If trader a is willing to go to X+2, or even meet X+1, I'll take X+2 or X+1 from trader A. I don't go back to trader B and ask for X+3. Doing that, eventually you end up with the item you are trying to get rid of that no one wants.
Now If I wanted to part with my Sgt. Centurious I might say "I will accept offers up until such date, highest bidder wins!"
For most Items you won't get a whole lot of competition, but sometimes it does happen.

Re: Underhanded at Bartertown Again
If I had a $1 for every 'sorry, I had a better offer' PM I would have a bit of scratch for sure.
That said, that is the way the cookie crumbles. No final deal was struck, so your out of luck
Personally, I like to go with the first offer I receive. If negotiations break down then I will go with other offers.
If I were to get into a situation where the new offer is much better and includes more stuff I might, as others have said, go back to the original person and ask for a counter offer.
That has not happened yet though (in 14 years!).
If it is that annoying to you, add them to your do not trade list.
Overall, I have found that other trading sites are not as well policed or as safe as Bartertown, and the folks here are some of the most top notch folks you could ask for.
Sorry that your mileage has varied.

From this I can tell you have resigned yourself to this behavior. That's your choice and I'm not knocking it. At least you have had a little intelligence to post it as a coherent statement rather then a dismissive attachment.blackspade wrote:If I had a $1 for every 'sorry, I had a better offer' PM I would have a bit of scratch for sure.
In my year of trading, I have avoided sites where people have deemed this as acceptable behavior. I dip in and out of Bartertown, but this type of thing has remained. I wouldn't consider respectful trade negotiations "Luck", but I do get the fact that people consider the forum a "competitive trading environment". In most places, as you said if a trade breaks down or an offer is made that you don't accept, you move on.
I would question whether having more controls and protocols makes trading any "safer" (More police & guns doesn't make you safer, ask most people in a police state)...and as not having dealt with the admin staff before I have no real opinion, but based upon my trading experience at other sites with less protocols and less police I have had many more pleasurable and successful trades then at Bartertown.
P.S. - A thank you to the posters like blackspade who can actually formulate a cohesive argument to this thread

Good catch. "price shenanigans" was exactly what I meant, but failed to communicate.porkuslime wrote:Not sure what is being described as Price Gouging..
As far as the rules state, you are correct, people can charge whatever they can get. They might get flack for it, but they can put their own price on their items.
Maybe Shirokuma meant something like this..
Jim - "I have 10 orks for sale, $5"
Eric - "Hey, I will take them! Got paypal ready now!"
Jim - "Oh, someone else wanted them already... can you do $7 for them?" (when in fact that is not true)
Eric - "oh heck no"
That is price shenanigans and not nice. It is not in the rules either, but, still aggravatin'!
Thanks, porkuslime!

It is not resignation, it is an acceptance of reality.PierceC wrote:

If I make an offer for something, It is with the understanding that until the deal is final, there are no assurances that I will end up with the item.
Am I bummed that deals that I was really interested in didn't work out? Yes.
But I do not hold the community as a whole responsible for my deals not working out.

Thank you for taking the time to grace Bartertown with your magnificence. Thank you for dismissing any other perfectly valid comments that don't line up with your own personal skew on reality. I am sorry that you missed out on some deals, but obviously someone else wanted the item more. You made this statement:
The personal skew you are putting on this is that, apparently the other person did move on, but you did not. So it would seem that you are contributing to the issue that you have with Bartertown. That is, you are holding on to and complaining about a possible deal that never got agreed to. So it wasn't a deal, and someone else made a better offer, and now you are upset about the whole site. Thank you for identifying your issue and contribution to it.PierceC wrote:In most places, as you said if a trade breaks down or an offer is made that you don't accept, you move on.That would be rational, transparent and equitable. Bartertown is a great site. It has been going for a nice long while. And this police state you are comparing it to? Well, I'd much rather have the admins, mods, and watch here watching my back rather than the risks of sites where they have no problem with known scammers to continue to 'trade'.
So THANK YOU! to the Bartertown Staff. You guys rock!

Regardless of whether or not we AGREE with PierceC or think he's whining or making a valid comment, the issue is that HE HAS THE RIGHT TO MAKE THAT COMMENT.
Disagree, if you want.
Tell him he's wrong, if you want.
Feel free to give contradictory "evidence" all day long.
...but do not hijack this thread and turn it to a flame-war against someone with a critical opinion, please.
I've asked once. I will not ask again.
PierceC, you've left some details out of your complaints.
You claim that people backed out of trades right before the exchange of address.
Was this before or after a final agreement was reached?
Depending on your answer, either part of the problem is with you, or you *are* part of the problem (IMO).
I DO NOT mean that as an insult. Please, let me explain before you make presumptions.
If no agreement on the deal has been made, then you cannot presume someone is holding the deal for you. That is just the way the world -even outside this web site- works. If you have not mutually agreed that you will sell/trade X for Y, then the other party is under no obligation to trade with you, or vice versa. That would be presumptuous on your part
That's the "problem is with you" explanation - it shows that you have a skewed idea on how trading workd in general (even on warseer & druchii, nobody is expected to make a trade with anyone else, simply because they've been talking prices).
Now, if you have made a deal on items for price/other items, and your partner is backing out AFTER that (but before trading addresses), then he's violating site rules and is eligible for a "Backout" or "deadbeat" thread and may even qualify for a negative reference - at your discretion - if his actions were bad enough.
Once a deal is struck, backing out is highly frowned upon here for any reason.
That's the "you are part of the problem" explanation - if this is happening to you and you're not reporting these people, then you're not assisting the site in stopping them and their antics. As such, you're enabling that continued behavior.
As for comparing us to Druchii or warseer... you're talking Apples and Oranges.
They are, first and foremost, gaming sites. They exist for the discussion of games and game relation activities. They only have trade forums due to member request. neither of those sites was created with the intent of creating and fostering a trading community.
The differences between us and them are palpable.
Please, note that -though i've not been to either in a long time, I'm a member of both sites. So, I DO have a modicum of knowledge on this.
What happens on those sites if someone scams you? Are there staff members across the globe (literally) who will do whatever they can, within reason, to help you? There are some sites who won't even let you report scammers, since their trade forums are unmoderated and at your own risk. "Scammed? Bummer!"
Warseer... I'm shocked they even HAVE a trade forum. Last I heard, they were closing it down because they couldn't monitor and eliminate the large number of scammers that were operating out of their forums.
Also, trading on THOSE sites is not as purposeful as here. In other words, Joe member on druchii is going to get rid of his "XYZ? because he just realized it's sitting around and he might be able to get the money (or trade it for) that new hotness unit he's been wanting.
Over here, you have the same... but you have people who log into here for the SOLE purpose of buying or trading for something. It's their MAIN function, as opposed to secondary. As a result, you have people who are more focused on getting the best they can for something, instead of just getting rid of it or getting just enough for unit "ABC."

Re: Underhanded at Bartertown Again
@OP: If you don't like trading here, then go away. Blaming the site for things outside their control is unfair.
And quite frankly, if the issue is that you're consistently getting "under cut" (I assume that means people are counteroffering lower values than what you want), then perhaps you need to re-appraise how much your stuff is really worth in the current economy.
You got any pics to help justify your original prices?

Re: Underhanded at Bartertown Again
Do you know what I HATE!!!!
When I REALLY REALLY want something bad, and I am only able to check the site at certain times, like coffee breaks and lunch. I send a person an email saying I want what you have and I am willing to pay exactly what you were asking for it, and they say I had one offer already for a lower amount, but i will keep in touch, if the first guy doesn't want to match what you offered I will get back to you.
I'm like WTF!!!????!!!
I just offered you exactly what you asked i can paypal right now. Why do I have to wait a few days for the other dude to match my offer. Just because i didn't catch you your ad right after you posted it. The other guy low balled you, why should he get first shot at it? You do not give what the person asked you gotta take your chances.
So you see PierceC there is another side to the story. If you want to barter and take a chance to get something for less that the person wants, you take your chances at losing it.
It MAY be your trade practices. Ask yourself the question. Did i offer less than the person asked in these instances. If it is happening alot it MAY be you that is committing an unknowing error in trade etiquette.

PierceC wrote:As the question been asked, I will give some answers: warseer.com & druchii.net.
At both I have found have users who when they enter a negotiation, they don't undercut the negotiation just because they get a better offer. First come first serve, is first come first serve, not First come, I serve you until I get a better offer.
And to Shirokuma, a website is like any other community. The prevading rules, cultures, standards etc. attract certain people to that community, in general. If a site is attract a certain element of trader, then it is because of the "culture" of that community.
Go whine somewhere else. I've had nothing but good times here. Hell the guys at the club called me master blaster since I'm always coming back in with new stuff via trades.
Thre's no such thing as "first come first serve" in trades. If I post something up and get 4 replies i'm going to evaluate the best deal, not whose PM comes in the box first. Its not a deal until its actually a deal, its called making a deal
Re: Underhanded at Bartertown Again
As there are a number of items I want to respond to I will be editing this thread
As there have been requests for me to post this incident that raised my original post, I have tried my best to put together an accurate account of what happened. I put my hand up straight away and will say that at least 1 PM and 1 email from the person I was trying to trade with is not included below. I deleted the PM (most likely in fustration, and the emails been deleted most likely down to cleaning up unneeded emails, but I believe the account is still accurate.
As stated before this wouldn't be a Backout because we never traded addresses.

Hello,
Is it possible to get pictures of the Adeptus Mechanicus cruisers? I would be willing to pay cash for them if they are in good condition.
So it's their for you to decide.
Resignation: http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/or ... on?view=uk
• noun 1 an act of resigning. 2 a document conveying an intention to resign. 3 acceptance of something undesirable but inevitable.
Strangely enough, as I stated in my original post the activity I describe does seem inevitable on most trades on this site. I find it very interesting that people who do enjoy this site even accept one of its fundamental flaws. Because I don't accept that flaw, I am wrong?
For your second point, I would expect normal, offer & counter offer. Most times I don't get a chance to counter offer, but again that's up to the trader to allow that. As has been pointed out in this thread by others, there are some on Bartertown that do and some that do not. I personally like those that do more, but again that's my preference.
In your second and third paragraph, you touch on a number of topics: My personal skew on the trade in question; Transferring my feelings fom the trade to the site; a deal that never got agreed; and regulation on Bartetown. A lot of topics in 2 paragraphs. Everyone has feelings about trades, however mundane they may be, and I expressed mine. I have made it clear in this and other posts about the "culture of Bartertown", once again not something I agree with but I have said my peace on that. The reason that deal never got done goes back to the culture, some people here have expressed a feeling of support for "first come, first serve" with counter offer approach, others have expressed a desire for a more "expedient" approach. Both are valid and practised here at Bartertown. Again with the regulation, I feel more safe trading on sites with much less regulation then Bartertown, and have personally traded much more value and across a wider geographical area. That however is down to preference. In no post have I said heavy regulation is wrong, but I did say that heavy regulation does not guarantee safety. But to the same point, little regulation does not make one safe either.
For the non-flame posts, which I once again I appreciate, I do think there is a point I acccept that in part that the conduct of the individual is NOT caused by the group. However I would counter that any activity not accepted by the group won't happen. For example, just an example, if there was a post for price gougers where people could complain about someone selling $200 Runtbots, then price gougers wouldn't be on this board. The group acceptance or dismissal of an activity is what makes it normal or not. If taking the another offer even if your in negotiations is acceptable, which after opening this threads seems I am in the minority of thinking it's unacceptable, then it will happen.
I will also make an apology that if my original post did seem to besmirch those WHO RUN (ADMIN) BARTERTOWN (especially in my last line) I am sorry. I was a user and poster at Portent, and the lost of Brimstone has been felt greatly, it does take a lot of time and resources to run a site like this and while I may not agree with common practices on the site I do respect the effort to have the site available to other gamers. Therefore, while I am not a willing party to all the practices of Bartertown, I do respect what it takes to make Bartertown

So are the ships still available? The reason that I asked for a picture was so I could just confirm the condition of the ships, as is normal on bartertown.
I would like the ships if they are still available.

Hello,
Is it possible to get pictures of the Adeptus Mechanicus cruisers? I would be willing to pay cash for them if they are in good condition.
So it's their for you to decide.
I am not sure I understand your definition, because the situation you describe is resignation:blackspade wrote:It is not resignation, it is an acceptance of reality.PierceC wrote:
From this I can tell you have resigned yourself to this behavior. That's your choice and I'm not knocking it. At least you have had a little intelligence to post it as a coherent statement rather then a dismissive attachment.
If I make an offer for something, It is with the understanding that until the deal is final, there are no assurances that I will end up with the item.
Am I bummed that deals that I was really interested in didn't work out? Yes.
But I do not hold the community as a whole responsible for my deals not working out.
I'm not sure where you live, but that's what most transactions are - "first come first serve". However, there are people in this post who do operate "first come, first serve" so just because you don't use it or expect it doesn't mean that other people don't. I have said in my posts, it's a feature of Bartertown I don't like the fact that if your in negotiations you can get cut off, but it is something that's prevalent, but I don't think its right. Also in my first post I mention the fact that there is this "anything goes" attitude till you swap addresses, but after looking through my posts and people's replies it does come back to whether you believe in "first come, first serve". Mental note: carmachu does not!carmachu wrote:PierceC wrote:As the question been asked, I will give some answers: warseer.com & druchii.net.
Norseman, that is absolutely fair! Every arguement has two sides and I would definitely rank yours as legitimate. But at the same time, if I were PM someone in my lunch break, start up a trade and I am about to him that "Submit" button that has a PM for X amount that seller wants but am pulled away. Well I better just hope that work doesn't come in the way of my trades. However if I am dealing with someone who will at least allow the negotiations to continue I need not worry. Both sides have merit, but we fall on different sides of the arguement.Norseman wrote:Do you know what I HATE!!!!
When I REALLY REALLY want something bad, and I am only able to check the site at certain times, like coffee breaks and lunch. I send a person an email saying I want what you have and I am willing to pay exactly what you were asking for it, and they say I had one offer already for a lower amount, but i will keep in touch, if the first guy doesn't want to match what you offered I will get back to you.
....
For your second point, I would expect normal, offer & counter offer. Most times I don't get a chance to counter offer, but again that's up to the trader to allow that. As has been pointed out in this thread by others, there are some on Bartertown that do and some that do not. I personally like those that do more, but again that's my preference.
As stated in other post, I do trade other places, but I have completed trades on here which means I have gotten things and people have gotten things from me, so occasionally I do come here to trade and am successful. To your second point, didn't even get a chance to put down an offerJohnHwangBT wrote:@OP: If you don't like trading here, then go away. Blaming the site for things outside their control is unfair.
...
You got any pics to help justify your original prices?
Creeper, in that particular post I responded to people's flames. I don't ever regard a flame to be valid comment, however in those first few responses if I did miss a valid comment, I will gladly respond to it in this thread. "Someone call a Waaambulance" is not what I would call a reasoned response, personally.Creeper wrote:I've wavered back and forth about posting any further in this thread (and that normally means you shouldn't), but as a long time member of Bartertown, I have to say this.PierceC wrote:From this I can tell you have resigned yourself to this behavior. That's your choice and I'm not knocking it. At least you have had a little intelligence to post it as a coherent statement rather then a dismissive attachment.
In most places, as you said if a trade breaks down or an offer is made that you don't accept, you move on.That would be rational, transparent and equitable. In my experience that never happens here.
Re: Underhanded at Bartertown Again
PierceC, as I stated before, you're welcome to criticize us/the site.
We (staff) wear our "big girl panties" here (
) and do not believe ourselves to be beyond reproach (like you WILL find on AT LEAST one other, newer, trade site).
That being said, you should know that your most recent post has been reported by a user, and for good reason...
While you are continuing to express your beliefs - which is fine- you're not answering the inquiries of those who are aiming legitimate questions your way.
Now, don't get me wrong. You're not "in trouble," and I'm not saying you're OBLIGATED to answer ANYONE in this thread. I will tell you, though, that if you continually come into the thread cmplaining, only answering selected posts and only to point out how "they're wrong," as opposed to having an actual discussion, it will eventually be seen as trolling. That will get the thread shut down pretty fast, as well as any similar threads you try to open.
--Again, not a criticism, threat or "official warning." Just a "FYI" kind of thing.
One other thing to keep in mind; Bartertown has been in operation for 13 years. I don't know if ANY game trade site with that kind of history. In that time, certain conventions and expectations have naturally developed amongst the users. The idea of "free market" and "open trades" are two of them. What that boils down to is that everything is available until you're told it isn't.
If you don't want something traded out from under you, it's simple to rectify. As soon as you start bartering with someone, ask them to reserve those items for you and not trade them away until you're done bartering/haggling. Works for me EVERY time.
Eric

Re: Underhanded at Bartertown Again
Eric,
Just to put in a quick reply, I will go through all "unanswered" comments 1 by 1 and add them to the above posts. Usually I can only get to 1 response at a time at work, but when I get home I will throw up some PM conversations.
Your advice from the last paragraph is a good idea, and I think I will be using it more often. As I said in my original posts, I don't trade on Bartertown often, so there is usually a gap between posts, but I will try to "put my side across this evening"

Cool.
...and, to stress... you aren't REQUIRED to respond to everyone. Hell, you aren't required to respond to ANYONE.
My advice was only meant to show a way you can get a better resolution or, at least, response to your post.
@ everyone else... The OP is now well aware of his option to "go somewhere else to trade." I'd like to... request... that we refrain from any further commentary along those lines.
Thanks.
