Illegally Cast Models

Post by Ork »

Does anyone know GW's policy on illegally cast models? I heard a rumor that they would replace them.
I recieved a 20ish lot size of minis off ebay around 20 months ago (X-mas before last). I had always planned to use them, but they sat in my closet. Then a discussion poped up about how to tell if they are reprints. They are. Could someone please help me with (if anything) what I should do?

I doubt that rumour is true, as GW would be losing money due to the recasts as well as the cost of replacing models for those people who have come into possession of them without knowing it. If the seller is still on eBay, you could try to talk with them, but at 20 months this is highly unlikely. Unfortunately there really isn't anything else you can do, but you could report the eBayer to Games Workshop to prevent other people falling victim to recasters.

If they are good quality recasts and you don't mind using them then giving them a good paintjob should make it difficult for anyone to tell the real and fake models apart.

The rumour you heard about GW replacing counterfeits is somewhat true. See their website:

http://www.games-workshop.com/ippolicy. ... terfeiting

At 20 months, i don't know how much you can do, but that link is a starting point. Replacing models sounds like an attempt to encourage reporting of counterfeiting more than anythings else. So if the guy is still selling stuff, GW may be especially interested in hearing from you. If he's not, i don't know how much interest they'll have; 20 months is a long time.

Out of curiosity, what leads you to believe they are recast models?

I'd say your chances of getting some manner of reimbursement are pretty slim. On the other hand, if you can still prove your case you may be able to get something. A receipt or bill of sale, paypal receipt or something similar would be good.

Alternately, contact GW and see what requirements they have. Could be that 20 months is just too old for them to do anything about.

Recaster

Post by mypaupau »

Sounds like a seller who went by the username of kckid114, and is now using collectorfigs. He is a known recaster and has been discussed on TMP's bulletin boards more than once. An email aquaintence of my said he met him at a convention in Ohio not long ago, and he made no secret he did recasting. He has, or still does, sold Citadel, Rafm, Grenadier, Heritage, and Tabletop miniatures, maybe others. Always primed white, and always no longer made, at least by the companys the copyrights belonged to. Someone to avoid.

I got stuck with some counterfeits through eBay, Warhammer dwarves to be exact. I actually went down to the Gamesworkshop HQ and brought them in along with all the correspondance and the box they came in (I save everything  ). It was GoblinsGoodies on eBay, anyway GW replaced the models and gave me a little bonus figure. It was a witchhunter figure....huahuHAUAhUAHuahUAH, GW kills me. As far as Goblinsgoodies goes I haven't seen him list anything on eBay for over a year now.

GoblinGoodies is out of "tha biz"

He told me he sold all his stuff and won't be selling more, maybe some lawyers contacted him or something.

That was near the beginning of this year I believe.
