but what i was getting at, even if it can be recycled, would they want you to know that? because then it may mean or appear to look like they are using a cheaper/substandard product

That's actually not a bad idea- I wonder how much a sprue of plastic is worth.

EDIT: Just saw Lin said Styrene isn't recyclable, but also said they can melt it down and reuse it in their molds- what's the difference?

A sprue of plastic isn't worth much from a raw materials standpoint. As i said, it's probably between USD $0.50 - $1.00 per pound for the plastic, which would be probably 5 to 10 boxes of plastics to have a dollar's worth of spare plastic sprues. And while they might be able to melt it down and resuse it, they'd have to collect it, store it, and send it back to the factory - it would be a huge hassle and it would cost far more than any savings they might get out of it.

The plastic is called polystyrene (usually abbrievated PS), styrene is the base component and is actually a liquid. Not all plastics are made from PS, some of the others can be recycled, some cannot. PS is recyclable, but i don't think the GW plastics are pure PS, and they might not even contain PS at all.

As for what Lin said about melting down and reusing the sprues, but not being able to recycle them, i don't know if either of those satements are correct or not. But it's not a contradiction, as it is possible that you could do one but not the other. The difference is what you mean by recycling, which in this context i'm taking reycling to mean that there is a program in place to collect and reprocess some material. There may not be a system in place to collect and reuse the type of plastic used to create sprues (so by the above defination, they are not recyclable and so we just throw them out), but that doesn't mean that it's not possible to melt them down and reform them (don't try this at home). I don't know if that makes any sense, but it's late and im tired so that's the best i can come up with.
