Fairy riding a turtle

Post by gardenninja »

This is a repaint of a fairy statue that I got from a local gift shop. For those of you following these, I actually got it from a different shop than the other fairies I've painted.

I went for a strong mood with this mini- every color on her has a sea green added to it (this was a mix of Gnarls Green and Meridius Blue). I was rather pleased with how the mini pulled together in the end.

I've posted her up to CoolMini for anyone who cares to vote.

Well, now, that just opens up a whole lot of questions. Doesn't it? LOL

Clearly, she's riding the turtle underwater, as opposed to on the surface, as evidenced by the coral, seaweed and fish.
So, how does she breathe? Is she some sort of "sea faerie?" So, why no gills?
Okay. Maybe she's got some magic or evolutionary trait that allows her to breathe water into her LUNGS, instead of using gills. Okay. I can go with that.
Then, why does she have wings? I mean, penguins have wings, sure... but they don't look like this. Those things would be useless under water.

Perplexing, indeed!

I was thinking about that a lot while I was painting her. And she took a good while to paint, so I had a little too much time to think:

She's definitely riding this turtle while both are underwater- her hair is floating behind her rather than falling flat against her (as it would were she to emerge).

That means that she's the sort of fairy who can play a flute underwater. While she hasn't evolved gills for such things (such as the Humming Fish made famous by Doctor Seus) she clearly has a flute that can play music underwater.

Such things have been seen before. Sebastian had a whole orchestra fish that could play a number of woodwind instruments. Now, sound waves can travel well through water, and...

... Anyway I had someone ask me for a before picture, so I went and found one online. One note, some of the base had a huge hole in it (it didn't show up in the bronze version, but there was a large section of seaweed that was just a mess of miscast resin) so I did a bit of sculpting there.
