i almost wanted to write it in small letters but: I HAD AN EXTRA ONE...
so far my Original LR collection goes as:
1-RTB011 on sprues in box, complete with original decals and instructions
1-2nd ed. packaging shrinkwrapped
1-RTB011 assembled, unpainted
and this one to be converted in a Spartan following old White Dwarf article.

if i'm lucky, i'll be getting soon another one on sprue....

Yeah, people like me

It took me forever to trade for 1 of the old Land Raiders, and it was covered in thick paint and had a couple of broken pieces that needed repair. *sigh*

I am jealous of the awesome LR collection there. Many of the local gamers didn't recognize the old edition models (as the models are older than some of them, hehe), so it was always fun to bring a couple in to show off.

I'm just wondering why you are converting? Are you making a different type of tank?

He's attempting to make, (rather well it would appear,) a Land Raider Spartan. As he mentioned above, it's from an old WD article from when that old LR was the standard kit. That beak like nose protruding from the front and the open top manned by termies were the conversion's defining characteristics when compared to the standard Land Raider.

So for those who hate him for cannibalizing the old LR, he's actually doing it to make an even RARER variant so that should satisfy some of you I would hope. :-D

yep, in an old White Dwarf (119 and 120 IIRC), Tony Cottrell put an article to convert some SM vehicules. at that time, only the Land raider, the rhino and the predator were available as a kit. The article gave you the possibility to convert a whirlwind and a vindicator from the rhino kit and the Land raider Spartan and sabre tank hunter from both kits. Also at that time, the Spartan was the only transport option availalble to the Terminators.

why the conversion, first for the fun of it and then because i'm using a fan-dex for pre-heresy army list that allows the Spartan to transport squad of 20 marines (max out squad which gives you more options). Always thought it'll be fun to have one.

Once this one is down, i'll do the Sabre Tank hunter with the left over parts...

A point on gathering those models, there's probably around 4-5 unassembled land raiders popping on ebay every year, off course some of them are beyond my reach (brand new RTb05 - the box with 2 land raiders in it went for 350$ last year). but with time, it is possible to find one. Now that FW released a updated version of the kit, prices may lower a bit but as a general rule anything below 120$ for an unassembled one is a fair price

@HarlequinZero: you were faster than me in asnwering.. :-D

I understand nostalgia.

So, nostalgia aside, I don't know how anyone can think ANYTHING positive about that model. the original LR is just SO. DAMNED. HIDEOUS.
Urgh!

I didn't play 40K in that time frame, so I don't feel nostalgic for it. That being the case, I wouldn't even want one of those things in my collection (unless I got it cheap, at which point it would only be in my collection long enough to make a profit off of it). lol

Nostalgia apart, yes, the kit isn't that great for 2011..
.in the late 80s, they were not so much SF kits, it was a pretty good design for that time.
And put back in the setting of RT, it felt spot on and still feels like it

Just like the Beetlebacks titans, the kit is awful, but it fits perfectly in the setting for which it was created.

Also the new DE range, they fit perfectly their setting compared to the previous rendition of them which even in their own setting (3rd ed 1998) were bad, and always will be...

I tend to think of a lot of the old models as "bulldog" ugly. Meaning: so darned ugly they are awesome. Adding to that, they tend to be fairly uncommon to see, some are even rare. I am the only person I know of (locally) that has an old Armorcast Reaver, and I have 1 of 2 local AC Warhounds. There are a couple of Forgeworld Warhounds around, and admittedly they are a heck of a lot cooler looking but you can still easily get them if you cough up the cash, whereas the old stuff you have to track down.

Maybe that is what gets me...the thrill of the hunt!

i hear you there, did the Happy Dance this afternoon after getting 3 old rhinos NIB....
the AC stuff is what i miss. it was quite hard to get in Europe when they were available. i never trusted my friend talking about that store that had a Phantom Titan until i saw it with my own eyes...

A reaver might be my next hunt
