Re: Posting Reference ettiquite?
We discussed that at length in Ancientsociety's thread about people not leaving references. We decided that that was taking it too far (at least, I think that is what we decided). I sent out my third reminder to the guys who have not left me references, but most of them have chosen to ignore me again...
I don't understand it. It just takes a minute.
I think with the next reminder I will state that I am going to put them on my Do Not Trade List. I just find it discourteous and really contrary to what this site is all about.

Re: Posting Reference ettiquite?
When i send a PM asking about a ref, i include all the info needed to fill out the 'post a ref' form (my real name, state, country, and what we traded). I'm guessing that some people might not leave a ref because they don't remember all the details. Hopefully having it all right there in the PM removes that excuse and makes it easier for them to post a ref. I don't know if that actually helps or not - some people still ignore me. But i figure it can't hurt.Adunaphel wrote:I sent out my third reminder to the guys who have not left me references, but most of them have chosen to ignore me again...

The DNT threat might work and i don't think it's out of line, but it's not the kind of thing i would do. Also, i assume that if someone hasn't left a ref after 2 reminders then they never will.
I follow the generally accepted practice that the person with the lower rating ships first.

Re: Posting Reference ettiquite?
It totally sucks when people don't leave refs, regardless of your total "score", but more so for new traders.
With the ITL down for several months, and tons of trades being completed during that time frame, it's quite possible some refs fell through the cracks. I know I was guilty of it with Peacemystic. I got a PM from him and squared it away immediately.
I'm also waiting on 4 references, from new and veteran traders alike. I think it's more of an oversite than anything mean spirited. I PM'd all of them and hope they can post the refs.
The best advice I've seen was to include all of the info for the reference. I'll do that with round 2 of my "Feedback Please?" PM's.
If I owe anyone else a ref, please PM me

You don't owe me a ref, but I'm wondering why I'm not on your "Good Traders" list.flagg07 wrote:If I owe anyone else a ref, please PM me

Re: Posting Reference ettiquite?
Might I suggest the following:
Assuming you have a lower rating than the person you traded with, send them a PM. In it, state that you are ready to leave feedback and that you'd like confirmation that they will do the same.
If you get a positive response, take the chance and leave the feedback. If they took the time to respond, they'll likely take the time to leave feedback.
If you don't get a response, forget them, and don't leave feedback. That way you aren't rewarding them without at least the promise of getting yours in return.
As for any form of making references mandatory, I am whole heartedly opposed to this. I want the choice to leave feedback. If I didn't like the guys attitude, I don't want to be forced to leave FB even if it's neutral. To be honest, I don't and won't leave neutrals. I suffered retaliatory FB on eBay and fear the same here. I know it's against the rules, but it can take a long time to get corrected and I don't want marks on my very valuable feedback rating. At 122 rating I still feel like a very tiny fish in a huge pond and that mark could hurt my trading.

Amen to that! Especially since one Neg here is worth 1000 Negs on Feebay.consectari wrote:As for any form of making references mandatory, I am whole heartedly opposed to this. I agree that ref's shouldn't be mandatory. Not for the same reasons... I just think that we should have the option, regardless of our reasons.consectari wrote:As for any form of making references mandatory, I am whole heartedly opposed to this. That said, - and this does not change my positive opinion of YOU, Con- I'm not too keen on your reasoning. I mean, if anything, a negative here is FAR preferable to one on FEEbay. On FEEbay, it's relatively anonymous. people see what's there, and you don't have the opportunity to address it withoug looking like an idiot by addressing it in EVERY AUCTION.
On here, you have an active back & forth with people, where you can address it. Plus, you have the satisfaction of knowing that the jerkwad who left the retaliatory negative was immediately banned from the site.* A simple notation in your sig line (which I used for a long time) that says, "I have one negative reference. It was a retaliatory reference and is due to be removed. If you have any questions about it, you can PM Linrandir or TrademasterAdam."
Plus, at 100+, your ref's (in my experience) rarely ever even get looked at during negotiations/pre-negotiations.
Plus, it's like refusing to stand up to the bully because you're worried about getting beaten up. Scars heal. Bruises fade. Dignity is forever.
Eric
*"Immediately" is a general term referring to the amount of time it takes Linrandir to actually get the opportunity to get onto the site from Gilligan's Island.

I agree. Feedback shouldn't be mandatory. Though it'd be nice if Positives only counted as +1 until the Feedback was returned...consectari wrote:As for any form of making references mandatory, I am whole heartedly opposed to this.

I don't want to leave Neutrals, I'd always prefer to work things out and have people work with me. And I'd rather leave a Neutral than a Bad. But if I'm trading with someone, I'd rather see the Neutral than not know if there may be issues.
Neutrals and Bads are your obligation to help inform the rest of the community of problems. If everybody hid the negative stuff, nobody would ever know about problems, and the risk would be higher. One or two Neutrals won't sink anybody. A pattern of several Neutrals points to something else entirely.

I haven't had to yet, but I'd leave a Negative if it was deserved.
I'm just not willing to risk a Neutral which would really be more because the guy p!$$3d me off than because he screwed me over.
And what is this D-I-G-N-I-T-Y you speak of?
