Can't PM user - they don't exist?

I've been getting this error a lot recently, does anyone know what the problem is? It's definitely not my spelling, I've double checked again and again.

Case matters? If all else fails, go to their user page and click the Send PM button.

Why are you even spelling it? Click "PM user" or "reply".

Who is the user in question?

More importantly, WHAT error are you getting? Can you provide a screen shot?

If you're typing the name in the box, but not hitting the "add" button, that would cause problems. I've done that before.
