This is as much a question for the mods and admins as it is anybody else. Why, given the current settings on Bartertown, is "bumping" against the rules? The post doesn't actually move up in the listing of threads, nor does it really do anything beyond put a red mark next to the thread if it hasn't already gotten one (e.g. if the user in question already read that thread) and add +1 to the "Posts" column. Is there a background issue at hand?
Please note that I'm not challenging this rule, because it's not a major sticking point or anything, I'm mostly just curious as to why it's a rule at all, and it seems like busy-work for the moderators.

For me, I have my settings set to "View New Posts" so I can see what all has been updated or posted since I last logged in. This allows me to see things before they are taken by other members or quickly view any updates to a thread like models sold or something along those lines. If someone was to bump their post every hour by just commenting in their thread (or back to back comments between members about how cool the pictures look) all of the new stuff would quickly be pushed to the back of the bunch (second and later pages in this case) and I would miss out in any potential deals or updates that may effect a potential deal. It would then make it so I have to go to each separate forum manually and look through the list.
Now if I am specifically looking for something THEN I will manually go through each forum until I find it.
So really, it's more of a luxury and time saver for me.

3eland said it right. That is the reason. Although folks like you and I aren't really affected (well, I am... but I'm staff... it's different), to someone like 3eland, you really ARE bumping your post in that case.
Also, note that some things that are technically bumps get overlooked. Recently, we had a member who had been annoying another one. The annoyER posted into an ad that the annoyED had posted and the annoyED responded and asked him to stop threadjacking. Technically, it's a rule violation. I PMed him about the overall situation, and I did discuss that it was technically a bump, but I didn't lock the thread.
