FOAM MODELLING

I know nothing about foam modelling. What are the cutting tools that you recommend? brands? I understand that many use the hard foam board. The softer has two basic types, one of which crumbles fairl easily. How would you prepare the foam? to prevent excess absorption of paint and glue? Would you recommend any particular modeller's guides?
