Advice: repair of aircraft canopy

Post by bhouze »

I dropped the canopy of my FW Vulture and it broke a piece off.
Looking for some advice on how to fix it.
I will assume it's resin so I will need super glue. (maybe gel over liquid?)
Really worried about the canopy going cloudy.
Could use some advice/hints from someone who's been there.
thanks,
Brad

Superglue absolutely will cloud it.

Do you have a pic?

Two-part epoxy might be the way to go--used sparingly!

I've heard of toothpaste ridding the cloudy look glue gives. I have never tested it though so I would do so on a piece of scrap first.

Is there any way you can just replace the entire thing?

Umm I've never heard of clear resin.
There are plastic glues that will not cloud the plastic. If you use the Testor's Model Masters cement SPARINGLY, you won't cloud the plastic. This is what I use.
Testors also makes some cement specifically for clear plastic.

One of the locals uses a craft glue, that doesn't cloud plastic. He works part time at the GW store, so he only uses GW glue; all of which is a form of super glue. [except of course pva glue, which is white glue.]

I often use a thick gloss varnish as glue or filler for clear stuff- doesn't always do a perfect job, but it's the best I've figured w/ a fair amount of testing.

One of my 'crafting' buddies has suggested gorilla glue clear gel.
It's a super glue that is suppose to dry clear and may sometimes have a yellow tinge.
I figure as long as I use it really sparingly (and stick to the painted sections) it should (fingers crossed) work.

BTW this is not a creative endeavour. It broke it and I need HELP! (just saying)

I'd definitely suggest trying it on a scrap of similar material, and in the case of super glue, you should try it in an enclosed space like how it'll be mounted, to check for offgassing.

I know... but it's the closest thing we have to an appropriate forum for your issue.

I contemplated putting it in the "Cafe" forum, but you'll get more hits here.

It has been along time since I did anything GW, but doesn't GW outright own FW now?

Reason I am asking I that I broke the canopy to a wave serpent I had and reached out to GW. As much as I dislike them as a company they mailed me a new canopy for free. Try reaching out to FW and see if they will help you.

GW has great customer service. FW has never responded to my requests or complaints. A reversal of quality vs. basically everything else either company does...

FW is a division of GW, basically... but they are NOT GW.
IF you get a response from them, you're not going to get them to recast a piece because you broke it (opinion).

I finally found the right glue for the job.
Testors clear parts cement and window maker

Just thought I should share in case anyone else has a smilar issue I was not in a huge hurry to fix the problem as I have sold all my 40k except my air wing (3 magnetized valks and a vulture). Now at least I can re-post my kijijii (canadian craigslist) ad.
