Metallic red

Post by kturock »

Years ago GW made a line of metalic paints. I still have them; purple, gree and blue.
I want to paint my Harlies red. Actually candy apple red with a metal flake. Any car guys here will know what I mean.

I've tried mixing various reds with silver and aren't getting the right color.

I'm looking for suggestions.

Vallejo makes a metallic medium that you could add red to. I haven't tried it yet myself, but that's my understanding of what it is for.

You like craft paints... have you looked there?
Back in the day, I had a HUGE amount of metallics, including colored. I found that Folk Art had the best metallics.

Vallejo has a metallic airbrush set of some more unusual colors- they might work? I've accidentally used their airbrush paint as regular paint- comes out on the thin side, but it could be worth a test?

I have done a LOT of regular painting with Vallejo airbrush paints. Except that they go on a bit thinner, they work as well as the standard paints.

Well, the flgs sells some Vallejo and Game Color and Reaper paints. Not many choices since the supply is old and they never reorder. They bought a complete selection and are selling them out. They have GW as well. Also there's the GW store.
I'll have to check Michael's and Joanne's. There is 1 other 'hobby store, but it's mostly RC and such.
Miachaels has Folk Art, Americana and Craftsmart. I think they have Testor's also, but not many.

There is 1 good art supply store, I'll have to check there.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'm mostly looking for specific names, rather than generic guesses/choices.

Minitaire (Badger Airbrush Co.) has candy colours for airbrush. They are called ghost tints.

There is a video (albeit old) on the them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PENdrkjgpzI

Another video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5BfmW6pyd8

The red has supposedly been changed since the video and is more red now (the review video).

Scorching Red looks closest. But is missing the silver flake.
THe color red I'm thinking of is the color of Candied Apples; thus the Candy Apple red name. It's bright. It's shiney. It's red.
And I want it with a silver flek or flake.

The Ghost Tints (on the bottom right side of the chart) are the candies.

Supposedly Fresh Blood is pretty close to a candy apple.

***EDIT: OOOOH sorry. I thought you were looking for a candy paint. Like the type of paint. My bad. You might be able to add some metal paints in it to give some flecks?

That red, but a bit "brighter".
Is that the 'flesh blood'?

It is the Fresh Blood yes.

Perhaps it can be brightened? Maybe a white base coat.

I was looking online. I searched candy apple red. I saw several autoparts stores have the multipaint spray paints. Dupli color. YOu spray primer grey, then spray silver and then red and then seal.
They also have online the color changing paints, that change color as you change the angles.

So the 1 RC shop and then several of the autoparts stores.
Heh I can get 1 paint via amazon for under $10 and use my charge card points to get it for free. ;-)

Ghost tints are transparents, so you will need to layer it. Perhaps if you used it over a metal you might get what you want.
