Help with Marine Shoulder Pads (BT to be exact)

Hello Btown!

So I recently bought a Sisters army with a bunch of Black Templars. A heavily themed army I have been testing for a few months. Today I found the old Black Templar Crusader Squad 10 man kit and picked it up (saves me having to buy the upgrade kit).

So I was sitting here looking at the sprues and all the cool things on it.

Then I realized I know nothing about Marines and their uniform. I've always been the Tyranid guy, my wife had Grey Knights at one time (she sold them off ) but I never really paid attention to them.

I have all these cool shoulder pads I want to use but not sure what shoulder they go on. Do I put one shoulder pad empty (then use the little cross transfers) and the other pad one of these cool ones? I also have 6 really large shoulder pads with cool details that do not have edges. I remember reading in the old Black Templar book that each shoulder means something different (and colours are ranking too) and the no edge shoulder pads are Neophytes. But these shoulder pads are REALLY nice looking, like to the point of thinking they shouldn't be on a Neophyte.

So I am stuck and need your help! Below is a picture of the big shoulder pads in question.

Also, anything else I should know about how to assemble a Marine's uniform would be helpful. I am also doing Assault Terminators with hammer and Shield and I picked up the Forgeworld Shoulder Pads (and shields :D )- if there is a specific shoulder for those I would love to know too! Do people get picky with the whole colours thing for Black Templars? I think I want to keep it fluffy in terms of the colour shoulder pads so Initiates would be black trim white base, my Assault terminators would be red trim and white base but what about my Captain? There isn't anything of high ranking here in the book.

Thanks all!

Ryan

These are the shoulder pads in question. There is also a spiky one (just has small bumps on it)

There are a couple on GW site that have the chapter logo on the right. Is there any reason why that would be? GW error perhaps?

The big ones are termy pads. The little ones and power armour ones.

Thanks!

GW error. Particularly zealous BTs may also "double down" on their Chapter allegiance.

Lol. I imagine that is the best way to look at it. But for the sake of staying fluffy I'd like some authenticity LOL.

I decided to put the cool Templar shoulder pad on the left and a regular blank shoulder pad on the right. It looks actually pretty awesome. When I get this unit up and assembled I shall post some pictures :D

Some chapters do whatever they want with their chapter markings- this is particularly common when they don't follow the regular 10 companies/10 (11 w/ cmd) squads/10 marines breakdown.

-Space Wolves often have their company marks more prominent than their chapter badge, and squad marks are just geometric based on rank (not number)
-black templars just have crusades instead of companies, which sometimes join each other (so there are flexible quantities of battle formations) and don't traditionally have separate scouts (they used to only have them in crusade companies), and generally have a lack of clear command structures other than their Marshals (unless this has changed). Mostly, they just have black and red shoulders on veterans and anything else goes, and the black and red veteran pads were based on one white dwarf member doing that with his army back when BT's had a mini-dex and little background
-astral claws have/had little in the way of squad or company markings, partially to obscure the fact that they'd gone way past their allotted 10 companies (outsiders had no way of telling how many there were without markings to track)
-legion of the damned are small (and ghosts, maybe) so don't have a need for markings

Sure!

I highly prefer the chapters where there aren't standardized markings because it means I don't feel like I'm breaking any fluff or markings when mixing guys around (for instance, sometimes a heavy weapons guy is in a tactical squad, sometimes he's a devastator; my veterans can be vets, command squad vets, or sergeants), so spent a fair amount of time looking at the various ones (astral claws are my chapter of choice, though I've dabbled in several)
