Home Made Game Table

HI everyone,
A while ago I had started a thread asking where everyone games at as my local GW Bunker was moving to a new location and downsizing to a 2 table store. As going to the new location for games is probably not going to happen, I built a table for my oldest son and I to play on. As this is he first one I have ever built, I went with a desert table just because I felt it would be the easiest to do. The surface is 4' x 8' and the sand has been glued to it, as well as having thinned glue painted over it to keep it all intact. There is also a shelf on the bottom to store our game cases and scenery on. I think I need to add to the table a little bit - A slide out drawer for casualties on each side and maybe some cheap cup holders from Auto Zone screwed to the sides to keep the top clean. Have a look and let me know what you think.

Total spent on all the lumber, glue, and sand was just under $100 for a 4' x 8' table.

Thoughts:

First off... WELL DONE! It looks nice.
Second: Do you really NEED places for casualties? WHFB & 40K are played on 4x6 surfaces, typically. Couldn't you use the extra 2x4 space for that? It's what I did, back when I had a big 4x8 in my basement.
I wouldn't add anything to this. If you really feel like you need a space for casualties, build a smaller table to match... and screw the cup holders on to that.

Great work!

Eric

MagickalMemories - thanks for the compliment, I really appreciate that!

You do have a valid point about the playing size only needing to be 4X6, I forgot all about that. Casualties and dice rolling can be done in the last foot on each side. Cup holders may still happen if I can make it look half way decent.

what you could do is in the extra space with some extra 1x1's or 2x4 build a 4ft by 2 ft box that sits ontop of the table where you role your dice. (except for scatter). If your like most gammers rolling on the table and having to chase dice under models, cocked on scenery or just disappearing into the ether is frustraiting.

Always cool to have that, and it would work much better then teh MOnoply box top me and my son use in the kitchen :D

Other then that awesome job man!!

I built the same thing a while back. I really like the bottom storage! I use mine for a poker table so I didn't put bottom storage on it. I really really really wanted to put cup holder on mine as well but I could not find one that looks good.

What I plan on doing is taking wood and routing out a cup holder and attaching it on the bottom that spins out for use but that may never happen its just an idea.

Here it is in the current state

Dawink, I like the look of your table, it has a nice finnish to it. The bottom shelf is a must for us as storage is an issue for a family of 5 and my wife makes it very clear that my 'toys' need to stay out of the clothes closets.

Man... I read that and I could practically hear the same words out of my own wife's lips!

Your table is pretty functional and large... something that I envy! Ever since moving out of my house and into a metro area, space seems to be severely lacking despite the premium I pay for my dwelling :( . As far as polish goes... a bit of staining and polyurethane and it'll look all nice like Dawink's!

As for cupholders... would these fit the bill? They fold away when not in use so you can maintain that clean look.

Really nice tables Chris33 and Dawink!

I'm moving next month, and I'll be looking at building a permanent table too. I'm bookmarking this thread right now for inspiration. :)
