How to make slime effects in Canada/USA?

Post by 3eland »

So I have seen many tutorials and videos about making the slime effects, but the stuff used is always UK based. I would like to know if anyone has any recommendations on products easily available to Canadians. Most stuff Americans can get we can also get (to a degree) so if there is something you neighbours use I'm all ears. I have decided after many, many, MANY different schemes for my Tyranids, a scheme I really enjoy. They are very slimy though like from the movie Alien(s) and so would like to do the cool looking slime effects. UHU, the name brand that is most popular on the interwebz is unavailable here, or at least I cannot find it myself (maybe someone will know where it can be found?) and I have hot glue guns but the stringy bits I find are too fragile and I want them to harden enough that a slight knock from normal game-play won't break it.

Thanks in advance guys, oh and if you have pictures of your slime/ooze/etc don't be shy in showing it off, any information and examples will help me bring my bugs to life (finally!).

I've used Elmer's glue before, back forever ago when I first got into Nurgle stuff (early 3rd edition). But then again I was a teenager.

Yeah, I don't think Elmer's glue would do the slimy, stringy effect I would like to achieve. I found some "all-purpose" glue the other day in the dollar store and decided to try it out. It's from the name brand "Titan" (which I didn't even know existed), comes in a 30 ml tube and it seems to almost do what I want. It's not as hard as I hoped but it gives a nice look. It has some cool looking bubbles in it which actually looks what I think a slime covered Alien would have dripping off. I feel my expectation of the glue become harder is a little high, although I shall continue looking for other products to see if I can get something with a stronger bond or harder curing.

Once again any information from my fellow Btowners will help!

Maybe something with a hot glue gun with some green tinted glue?

That is a very interesting way of making coloured hot glue!

Late response but here goes...

Have you tried using a thickening "string" gel artist medium? Liquitex makes a product called "String Gel"... essentially it is a transparent acrylic medium that you can mix acrylic paints with to create a viscous syrup - it allows artists to easily create "strings" of paint on canvas. The sheen will be dependent on how much acrylic paint you mix in (less = glossier). Keep in mind that mixing in paints will make the syrup opaque. To create a slime effect you would want to tint the medium with ink which would create a translucent syrup that should stay glossy once dried.

Thank you,

I will have to try that out. I have just been painting them up in the meantime since I haven't gotten a product that looks good yet. Thanks!

I don't have any string gel medium on hand to demo what you can do with it (mainly because I haven't had a need to produce the slime/ooze effect) but, I've seen folks using it on canvas and it seems to have the ideal properties:

- Non yellowing (UV safe)
- It's viscous so you can make it stringy
- It comes transparent so you can tint with color to create translucent effect
- It dries glossy
- It has some flexibility to it (so it's not very prone to cracking)
- It is air-dry (not temperature based like hot-glue)

Here's a link to a nice lady doing a demo of it's properties:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jnG2DgCgOY

A technique that I've come across in the modelling community for dripping slime starts with fishing line - you run a length of it as the "path" of the slime and then build up hot glue or elmer's glue (both of which dry clear and can be tinted) along the fishing line. If using string gel, I'd imagine you would want to use fishing line for particularly long runs. For small runs gravity should do the trick (just keep that gel viscous!).

Hope this helps!

I've actually tried to do the fishing line thing... when I put the glue on the end (gel superglue for maximum control) it never cures! I have no clue what is going on to make it not hold but I got so frustrated lol.

IIRC and I might not be, but one of my old gaming partners used to use superglue and then spritz it with water before it set.

As for the fishing line technique that you cant get to cure. Have you tried using something like Zip Kicker?

Can it be found at wal mart? I have been using just normal fishing line.

Zip Kicker is the brand name of super glue accelerator. Not sure where to find it in Canada. I know Gale Force 9 makes a version they call Rapid Cure which your local nonGW FLGS might be able to get there hands on.

Have you tried with just regular superglue? When I first started fishing I was taught to add a dab of superglue to the knots as a "just-in-case". It's never caused me any problems. Although, I haven't used superglue since I learned to tie proper knots and I certainly have not experimented with gel versions.
IIRC and I might not be, but one of my old gaming partners used to use superglue and then spritz it with water before it set.
I think I've been told something similar about spraying superglue with water to help it set. Also heard baking soda works too (on top, not mixed in... that'll mess up the bonding strength).

Hope that helps.

I'll have to try regular super glue... the amount of times I have glued my fingers together.... worth a try though!

Zip Kicker will cause your superglue to turn white or yellow, though, depending on the brand of glue you use... I've had both happen to me.
