Glue for cheap plastic?

Hello,
I know there's a hundred good reasons why I should use other, better models but:
I'm painting up some ancient Egyptians made by Italeri* and they are absolutely horrible at accepting glue. They aren't the smae plastic as Warhammer mins: both Testors and superglue just seem to flake off once dried. This is not a huge deal for affixing the guys to bases, but I have chariots to assemble. Any hints? Its the same plastic the old starter 'mechs were made of in the 1990's if that helps anyone.
*Strictly speaking, they were made by the now defunct Atlantic, re-issued by Nexus, and are distributed by Italeri.
