Am I that old....

Oi Btown,

For that last 2 years or so, i digged old Rogue Trader models, espacially the Marines' ones. Firstly as a reminder how how fun the game used to be (i'm not saying it's no fun anymore, just different) and also how kitch the universe and the models were. Almost 24 years after RT, i'm still in love with those models, even if i know they are nowhere near what GW and FW can produce now in terms of quality and sculpts. So here's the project, the long one as i paint rarely and play even more rarely. the goal was to get a copy of every model produced during the RT era. i already owned when i started a good chuck of them, i'm know around the 95% mark completed. Then the goal moved towards putting an army with those models (legal for V.5)...
here are the pics, excuse the bad pictures, photographs and tabletop design...

Rapier - count as Thunderfire, i do have a Thuddgun, but i'd prefer the rapier model for the 'count as'

I started to paint them as Imperial Fists, as i want them to be one of the first legions and flashy enough. problem, painting yellow is more than a pain.
here's the test model

so i might strip the 6 models i started and do something different, maybe a pre-heresy paint scheme (luna wolves?)
in anycase i got still a large amount of models the clean up and add in the army, as well as a second land Raider still on sprue (not sure about assembly it, i'm better keep it in that shape, put it under glass and hang it up in the office...)

also i'd like to thank all the people here that help me getting some old stuff in recent trades (got a Sensei recently, yeah!)

More to come as i continue to strip and repair as i go.

Cheers

J.

PS: i realized as i was typing that the models are old enough to drink beer in the US...made my day...)

I approve of this thread! Two thumbs up, mate.

If you want to go full Rogue Trader though, I have a couple of suggestions.

1. Pull that metal extra armour off of your tanks. That's 3rd ed. (Sell it to me though for my all metal marine army.)
2. Scrap the Vindicator. It's full on 2nd ed. Epicast made one for late RT, or you could convert one based on a White Dwarf article (lmk if you want a copy.)

But it's all beautiful as-is. Much love for the RT marines.

Yes, yes you are that old...

BTW, kitsch should be used to describe that tablecloth...

Those pics are full of awesome. Great trip down memory lane for me...

I have some of those models still. . . not as many as I used to, but some. Got a couple of dreads and rhinos from that era, and at least 30 plastic beakies though.

It is kind of funny to plop the models down for a game, and have the kid across from you give you grief about them being cheap GW knock-offs. And then pull out a copy of RT, and point out that the models are older than the kids you happen to be playing.

i knew for the Vindicator and the extra armour, i do have some more rhinos unbuilt to replace the one for the Sternguard. For the vindicator i could replace it by another devastator squad (with conversion beamers?)
then how can i used properly the marines with autoguns or shuriken catapult...

Next step would be to fund again the robots, i had 9 of them for while and sold them with the rest of a RT AD. Mech.army (another silly idea: )

anyway thanks for the nice words, i'll put more pictures as i go

Cheers

I'm using the 2nd ed Marines, so those guys but with the flat arm joins rather than the rounded ones.

PM me about Vindicator ideas--or maybe you might want to consider a Sabre Tank Hunter. :)

Again, great work.

ok, i still have 30 or so of those second ed. marines, used them for my ultra army, but this one includes only recent pattern of vehicules
As for the vindicator, i can use the plan from Mr. Cotrell found in WD, If i can find a 3rd Land raider, i'll definitevely go for a Spartan.

The Sabre is good idea, i managed recently to put my hands on conversion kit for the new rhino model:

until then

Although I've been familiar with the game since RT days (was popular at the shop where I D&Ded), I never got into the game until late 3e.
I never EVER liked the old SM models from RT. I just never did.
Not as a whole, anway. There were a few (Death Eagles?) with an eagle face on the shoulderpad that I really liked. No others.

That said, this has to be one of the coolest armies I've seen in a long time. I hope you keep this going as a modelling "blog" type post.

What problem are you having with yellows? Most of the Orks I've painted are Bad Moon, so I've done quite a bit of yellow.
Post what problems you're having so we might be able to help.

my main problem with yellow is that is long to get a good result, the commander took me a couple of hours and i'm still not happy with the result. my main issue is to find a good solid yellow that covers well with a minimum of layers. the one i'm using right now is a mix of 5 different shades based on PP cygnar yellow, i might just find a spray can for first layer and work from there, or buy an airbrush (if i sell my Dkok...)

Death eagles were good models, sad only 3 of them have been ever made, were they not early concept from Jes Goodwin? all the others are mostly the Perry Brothers and Aly Morrisson

perhaps try basing them in a medium brown then paint the yellow over that,Ive had a bit of luck with that

A friend of mine did an ImpFists army, and IIRC he painted them Bronzed Flesh and stained them yellow with yellow ink. He's an ace painter, and this was a simple and straightforward way to get good yellow results.

Perhaps the Army Painter's Yellow Primer http://www.thearmypainter.com/gallery_p ... ial%20Fist ? to help with the base coat.

even if i'm not a fan of the dipping system, i might give a try to the demonic yellow can. thanks for the link thou.

for the inking stuff, i saw how ChaosBunny was doing his, good job as well, but his technique is close to layering, what he's doing with yellow ink is what i'm doing with bestial brown and scorched brown.

anyway, an other day at work starts...

I posted a reply yesterday and it must've got eaten..

what I suggest and have done, for other other light colors, is spray the mini white.
i use krylon on metal and kmart white on plastic.

then i use spray [color] like red for BA or CSM, and then use inks/washes to give a richness and fill in any chaulkiness from the spray primer.

I found that some work better with washes and others inks and others, both.
