I think we really just need to rely on the honor system and not get bogged down in the minutia. I think the blanket statement that all models need to have been painted in the current year is good enough. Individual situations can be resolved via consensus as above.
Per Diem, Per Noctem.

Unless we are doing a straight cash/money transaction I will cover the cost of what I ship to you, and therefore ask that you do the same.

I follow standard B-town operating rules, and will always respond to PM's even if it is just to say "No thanks."

Reason I ask is I have a bunch of CSM that need to be finished (details, basing). They were started last year but I want to finish them and so I was wondering if they would count or not.

No.
It's always been, models started after 1/1 and completed by 12/31.
If it was otherwise, I have a bunch of dwarves I didn't finish last year.

If that is the case -Bartertown Honor System in place- I need to have 6 points removed. That Terminator Inquisitor was technically started (face and armor base color) about 5 years ago, then set aside. I did everything else to him this year. Same thing for the Green Demon Prince looking Chronopia guy. Ditto, the Spawn.
Majority of work was done this year, but all were previously started. I used this as my inspiration for getting to them. There are more hours into those 3 models this year than whenever they were started. That was my basis for counting them.

My take on it was completed models. I wouldn't have counted just touch ups (otherwise, I have about 10 Wolfen models to count), bases or minutia/small detail work.
I'd count complete/semi-complete repaints, though, where you're painting over previous paint jobs, even if you leave a couple old colors down as a base color for later highlighting, etc.

Again, those are just my personal thoughts. I'm the newcomer to this, so am willing to abide by whatever the consensus is or previous rulings were. If it is decided that only started and finished this year counts, please deduct 6 points from me. I'd want my corrections to be retroactive and not "going forward."

Thanks.

Eric

Okay cool. Makes sense and is fair.

I have Army scheme ADD, I tend to start an army one colour and change it a week later lol. It took me 2 years to finalize my Tyranid scheme (I should show you all my test Gants lol). I've been debating on changing the scheme of the CSM and perhaps this is a good reason too.

The attached is my current half finished scheme (so as to show what they are before so no cheating!), now to redo my entire army!

Also finished models. The treeman I painted as a necron c'tan, I painted, stripped and then repainted. Pics were posted of the model, but I didn't finishe th base, before I stripped it.

I do not have any finished CSM models. However I can take a picture of the entire army (they are all in stages of the blue/red). Don't worry though I am going away from the blue/red, it doesn't work well with snow and I want to do snow bases.

I have Army ADD where I jump between armies.

I have Sisters/BT, CSM, Tyranids and Skaven (recently sold my Lizardmen).

Last year I went by most the the paint job must be current.

If you only need to base them or decide to paint detail on models I think they wouldn't count, else you could paint a army one year and add the eyes the next and enter them twice.

If you have half painted / done models and decide that it's their time of glory and you actualy finish them off based and all then they would be worth the point because you spent the time and energy to bring them to that level this year.

I know I have a bunch of figure were the skin is done but nothing else that I hope to complete in the months to come.

Well I was looking for an excuse to repaint them so don't change my mind ;).

Here is my entire Chaos Army. I will be going away from the blue/red as, like I said previously, it does not work with snow and I want them based in snow.

Well, I happen to like the blue... and it would look good with snow.

(Casually not mentioning the red and blue together. *ahem*)

lol

Well, as much as I would like to finally finish them, I would also like to get credit for painting them (I mean what is the point of painting if you can't get credit for them and try and beat last year's winners right?). The majority of the models only need highlighting, details and basing. Which is fine, but it is also a huge chunk of the army that wouldn't get credit for.

There will be blue in the new scheme (Tzeentch says hello), and purple (Slaanesh) because no way am I painting pink (such a nasty colour to paint - like white and yellow).

I'll post my test scheme tomorrow night maybe and see what you think of it compared to what they are now (I'll post one of each Mark so you can see what direction I am going with it).

I think this is where the honour system should fall into place. If I assembled and primed some models last year but did all the painting in 2015, they should count. If I gave them a 5 min base coat and a quick wash, but then spent 2 hours per model doing details, highlights and basing then I think they should count, however anything past a basecoat and wash I wouldn't count so I won't count them.

Now that is just me because for me the basecoat and wash is only about 10% of the time I spend on painting them, I spend alot longer on the detail work, however I know for some others that a basecoat, wash and basing is all the do on the model so It wouldn't count.

Again this is a friendly comp with nothing at stake so I'd say just use you own personal judgement and just have fun!

Ah, that's too bad, 3eland, I like the red/blue look, particularly on details like the heads.

So, can we get a quick agree/disagree on the following guideline for painted models, then?
Models count as painted in [enter current year here] if most of the work on them was done in the current year. As a general rule, this will mean that 60%+ of the work (the honor system is in place!) was done in [enter current year here]. That 60% is defined as the overall area of the model and not the # hours into it. If you spent 2 hours doing base colors, highlights and shading in a previous year and 3 hours doing fine detail work this year (tassels, eyes, etc), it does not qualify.
