Re: SpiralingCadaver's hobby thread
Thanks! Yeah, Space Hulk has an absolutely great set of minis- IDK if I'd have bought them if I didn't intend to play, but they're the nicest board game pieces I've ever seen (and I think Space Hulk is GW's best boxed set, even if there are occasionally better single pieces).

Why do you shoot all of your minis on a black background?

Re: SpiralingCadaver's hobby thread
Because my choices are black, white, and some ugly primary colors that are used for ~screening.
I do a lot of stuff with textures and lighting, where I think it more naturally merges with a black background than white. Also, white will reflect the light more (bouncing up), so I don't like that I don't have as much control over the direction of light- if something needs more light, I'll add a light, rather than let it imprecisely bounce. I also felt it allowed lights to blow out because of the extra light bouncing to them, while darks got too dark as I needed to fight various settings so the background isn't pure white/allowing light to bleed on to the mini.
I have, however, considered switching to a dark mottled grey I've seen around (since it has most of hte advantages of black while allowing a clearer outline), but I'm happy enough with black that it's never felt urgent.

Re: SpiralingCadaver's hobby thread
Thanks! On yellow, the best quick tip I can give is start with a light base. (I'll eventually try to get a tutorial on it, too.)

Re: SpiralingCadaver's hobby thread
I got a friend who's a pro painter. He painted an entire Imperial fists army with brushes. His army has several vehicles and at least 1 DP. His secret was proper thinning of the paint. He only uses old coffee as a thinner. He has several airbrushes, he just wanted to use brushes.
I can barely get by with the models I've painted. Even these )&G are giving me grief.. skin and fleshtones...aaarrrgghh. Beasts, deamons and armor..no problem.

Re: SpiralingCadaver's hobby thread
So, I was inspired by a WAMP's current competition[/URL] to do bit more work on my much-beloved but recently somewhat-unattended Magnus force: WAMP is holding a conversion competition, and unfortunately my other choice mostly focused on an elaborate base as the conversion, which is strictly against guidelines.
Magnus is, was, and always will be my favorite Warcaster, and it was time he got another something special. He's now got a thematic Defender for his theme force, that doubles as Rocinante when he's playing straight mercs. (Obviously, I like his Rocinante version better...)
If you like him, voting's up, though it's the standard "register, to vote." Speaking of which, it's also election day tomorrow, here in Oregon.

(...mods, am I correct that I can reference other sites by name as long as I don't provide a link? I thought that was how this worked...)
