Flames of War question

Post by MEDEVL »

So I don't really know where to ask this question, but I bought a huge lot of FoW Russians at a local con last weekend to paint up and sell. I have never palyed the game, nor do I care to learn the game. I bought these purely to try and paint some 15mm minis, since I've never done it before and because it was a really good deal. So my questions are:
How many infantry guys go on a base and are there different base sizes?
What is the best source for cheap bases? I got tons of guys but no bases.
So I can advertise them once I finish them can somebody give me a Bartertown legal idea of what a single base costs points wise? Also how big are armies supposed to be?
Are there such things as special bases (like command or heavy weapons)??
Are there certain color schemes that are required or is any historical uniform OK??
What else should I know before I start this project??

I obviously have zero knowledge of this stuff so take pity on me. :) Thanks for any help anybody can give. Jay

Probably best going to http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=126 they would be the experts on this kind of stuff.

Hey Jay,

You will probably want to do them as close to historically accurate as possible.
Although, that is fairly easy. Just google Russian WW2 uniforms and Russian WW2 tanks and there are plenty enough pictures to point you in the right direction (hint: think olive green).

As for the rules and bases, I have no clue.

here is a pretty good article on painting Russians http://ordinarygaming.blogspot.com/2012 ... art-5.html
As for basing, two thoughts
1 look at the battlefront website
2 leave them unbased but include the bases with them when they sell. that way the new owner can base them as he wants and get the bases to match his stuff.

Thanks guys. I also had the brilliant idea (why didn't I think of it first???!!!) to look them up on Ebay and see what they are supposed to look like and what sells. It looks like there are different base sizes so I'll ahve to firgure that part out but the color schemes are pretty easy. I'll have to buy a new pack of detail brushes though!! I'll let you know how it goes once I get started on it all. Thanks again! Jay

Just recently got into flames of war but I'll take a crack at some of your questions.

How many infantry guys go on a base and are there different base sizes?
There are three bases sizes in FOW, small for weapon teams and command teams
Medium for most infantry squads and portable gun teams like Heavy Machine guns etc and Large bases for Artillery etc.
Small teams - Command team bases tend to have 3 guys, Artillery spotters bazooka teams etc tend to have 2 guys on a small
Medium - Tend to have 5-6 on a base
Large -The artillery and then the appropriate number of crew 3-5

What is the best source for cheap bases? I got tons of guys but no bases. FoW makes and sells very nice pre scultped bases that have round openings that you drop the guys into. You can also check b-town as alot of folks myself included have switched to sculpted bases and might have some of the original small bases lying around

So I can advertise them once I finish them can somebody give me a Bartertown legal idea of what a single base costs points wise?
Depending on what set they are from their point costs will vary greatly. most of the russian infantry are zerglike in that there are a large number of bases in each platoon (squad) for few points where a germans ss squad might be 6-7 bases russians might be double to triple that for a single platoon(squad)

Also how big are armies supposed to be?
Size varies greatly depending on what force they represent. If its an infantry only force you might have have 60 or more bases of infantry with some tanks and artilery as support

Are there such things as special bases (like command or heavy weapons)??
See above, for weapons it depends on the weapon some are mixed with normal troopers on a base and some are seperate

Are there certain color schemes that are required or is any historical uniform OK??
If you are trying to sell them I would suggest going off a russian uniform and having the models represent that unit

What else should I know before I start this project??
Feel free to PM me and I can try to help, I would suggest sorting the minis by their pose so you can see what you get and then lay them out before you start gluing. Also FOW caps retail discounters to 10% off so offers at 50% off you should steer clear of unless you want to selll them to me of course :-D
Rules
1. I do my best to communicate & ship in a timely matter & expect the same
2. If you or I back out of a trade expect the other to post so in the b/o forum etc, if thats not okay then I am not your man to trade with
3. An offer of "$25" for an item does not include s&h if you are not okay with actual shipping charges from the USPS on top of that then say "$25 incl s&h".. simple enough..
4. Please be polite, leave feedback
