I'm pretty happy with my first. Does anyone else have good stories about theirs?

Before I clicked on the link, I thought, "Is that a TriForce image?" , and was pleased that I was correct, hehe. Did it hurt a lot, being on a less fleshy part of the body? Are you going to get it colored in?

I know some people have an issue with pop-culture tattoo's, but in my way of thinking, if it means something to the receiver then it is no less special than any other marking. I told my wife that if I ever get in shape(other than round) I am getting a tattoo, and surprisingly she was ok with it.

Haha, yeah, what's nice is it pretty geometric, so it seems a lot more likely to be a nerd detector (people in the know recognizing it) than a nerd broadcaster (if I had a picture of Mario or something).

Being my first tattoo, I've got nothing to compare it to, but, yeah, it did, and I hear that less fleshy areas are worst, but nothing goes in so deep that it's going to be too huge of a deal (though I'd probably never get one on the back of my head-- regardless of how safe it is (completely), I don't think I'd like loud, buzzing things stabbing near or on my head for extended periods of time).

The most accurate description of the experience of getting a tattoo I've heard is, you think it's gonna hurt a lot, and your body's pumped full of adrenaline, then you start, and it doesn't hurt as much as you though, but then you realize it still really hurts. In terms of specific pain, the best I can describe is, it feels a bit like getting stuck with one of those standard needles at a hospital, except that gets slowly dragged along your skin. Mine took about an hour, with some breaks, to give you an idea of whether you'd be up for it, depending on pain threshold and how complex of a design you want (mine is pretty simple, except geometric stuff is harder, simply because he couldn't mess up). Apparently, shading (transitions) hurts the worst, or at least takes the longest.

Also, the corner that's sort of orangey is colored yellow, which is already more yellow, since there's less blood/irritation there. I'm not planning on having it colored more than that, though, since I like to keep things simple and clean (also, that one was fairly expensive already. Yellow's a problem color, since it doesn't show up incredibly well, so I thought that one filled in would look better than two filled in and one more opaque. Originally, I was looking at just getting triangles in yellow w/o the outline, but basically everyone I asked said that I'd get better results with an outline...

Funny thing, regarding your wife being fine-- my wife (and the generally well accepted tattoo culture where I've moved) was actually who got me thinking about a tattoo-- ask me five years ago, and I probably would have said "eh, not for me"...

Do you have any thoughts on what you'd want?

I think it looks great!

I went the other route years ago and all my tats are covered by a t-shirt.
I have a few I regret, and a decent Japanese dragon half sleeve.
Top of the hand or foot are tough spots as far as pain goes, the spine was pretty intense for me.

I was looking into getting my wedding ring tattooed a while back and most artists shy away from hands. It seems they like to make sure you have existing tats before doing visible areas like hands/neck etc. Even then its a fussy spot to work on. Glad you were able to find an artist that was willing to work with you!

One of these days I would like to complete full sleeves but $$$ and concern for employability held me back. Some day :)

Congrats on the new ink! Follow those aftercare instructions!

Thanks!

Good to know about the spine one, my wife was considering that...

The idea of a ring tattoo is pretty cool- I hear that ones around your fingers get worn pretty quickly, though?

And, yeah, they probably talked with me for 5-10 minutes to be sure re: hand tattoo for a first, and when they seemed satisfied that I understood what I was doing, they were ready to go.

Fortunately, the only employment I've ever had has been in creative industries, so, for me, it's kinda' like, if you're in a creative field but want to discriminate based on tattoos, I probably wouldn't want to work for you, anyways. Would be cool to see the half-sleeve, though.

And thanks for the reminder! I was a little overdue for washing it.

Get the rest colored in. It just screams unfinished until you do.

The dragon's tail that curls up on my bicep was the most painful bit for me. Upper shoulder/arm and middle of spine between shoulder blades actually didn't hurt.

I found myself wanting more and more each time I would go, and though I don't sport a body suit, I believe its simply a money issue LOL. I think the most painful places for myself are my armpit and around my nipple. The wrist and inside my elbow taking a close second!!!

Hmm. I got mine years ago. I've got an octopus on my right shin that goes from just below my knee to just above my ankle at an angle. Straightened out, it would probably touch both. I really didn't find it that awful.
I mean, at first, it feels like someone's dragging a razor blade across your shin. That was only the first 5 to 10 minutes, though. The next 3ish hours really wasn't too bad.
YMMV, of course.
