The greatest man in history, Jesus, had no servants, yet they called Him Master. Had no degree, yet they called Him Teacher. Had no medicines, yet they called Him Healer. He had no army, yet kings feared Him. He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world. He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him. He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today. I feel honored to serve such a Leader who loves us!

Is there a particular era you are interested in?

If you want to go "old school" and stick with the 4th Succession War/Pre-Clan era then the Warrior Trilogy of books by Michael Stackpole are a great introduction to the setting.

Michael Stacklpole also did another trilogy set in the early Clan era called the Kerensky Trilogy. Both trilogies are set on a grand scale involving the highest ranking movers and shakers in the Inner Sphere and give a broad overview of the political intrigues of their respective eras as well as feature some iconic battle scenes.

Of course if you really want to do it "right" you could always go in the order they were released:

"'This isn't really death,' Tyler says. 'We'll be legend. We won't grow old.' I tongue the barrel into my cheek and say, Tyler, you're thinking of vampires..." Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club
