This is exactly how a DC works.
Label/Receipt Number: LC12 6439 636U S
Class: First-Class Mail International
Service(s): International Letter
Status: Acceptance
What kind of mailer did you send it in? I'm guessing, as has been said, a bubble mailer... but they could be just using "International Letter" in a generic format I'm unaware of, I guess.
Status shows that it was acepted at your P.O. (IN Chicago, per below). Until it arrives in customs, that's all you'll see, probably. When customs receives it, that should be updated to show it.
Your item was accepted at 2:23 PM on September 18, 2009 in CHICAGO, IL 60618. Information, if available, is updated periodically throughout the day. Please check again later.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not making any claims that you're incorrect or anything. I'm just saying that your customs form # works like a DC on this. All it's showing is all it's meant to.

Give me a sense of humor Lord. Give me the grace to see a joke.
To get some humor out of life and pass it on to other folk.
I think what this situation needs is some imagination.
