Question:
What if you had/have a trade go sour and don't have any proof to post in the bad trader forum, as it was made on the chat site?
I haven't had this happen, but I was just thinking about possibilities. Most traders are experienced enough to realize that they would/do need proof if they're to prosecute/persecute the individual that did them wrong, hence, once things got close to a solid deal, then moderation would be given over to email or PM's.
Anyway...just asking. Thanks.

Always save the chatlog by hitting the 'save' button in the menu bar in the chatroom.

Also, make sure you finalize the deal through email, just for the sake of record keeping.

What I have been doing, is hammering out the deal in chat, taking notes as I go. Then when we agree it's final, one of us writes it up in a pm or email, and then the other responds that it's agreed to. Giving that "paper" trail that you need. Also makes sure that there is no confusion about what's being traded.

Live chat trading.

I follow the same rules that warmonger does. I have done two trades through the chat. When everything is said and done I write it down and then send the party an email or PM. That way there are no surprises and everyone knows what they are getting.
