I've been hanging around bartertown on and off for a while now, and it seems that most of the painted models here are given less value than upainted stuff. I have noticed that (IMO) many of the painted models advertised are a bit less than well painted, and i can see why people don't give much, or any, value to the paint jobs. But is there actually a demand for decently painted models here? If so, how well painted do they need to be for the paint job to be worth something?

In the case of painted minis a picture truly speaks a thousand words.

If you want to see what kind of reception your painted minis will garner, suggest making an ad with pics of said minis and ask for offers of whatever you'd like in trade for them.

I'm actually wondering in a general sense. Right now, i'm not trying to get rid of any painted models. But i'm curious if it's reasonable to expect that models with fairly decent paint jobs (in the cmon 6.5-7.5 range) would be worth more here than their unpainted counterparts.

In my experience here, people have always put less value on painted models on bartertown. In all the trades I've made including painted models, the paint job has been less than spectacular on the whole.

Well, in my case, everything I acquire gets stripped and repainted. I've already got my color schemes, and I doubt that anyone else is going to match them exactly or even close enough to blend in. Believe me, it's not because I paint well. Some of the minis that I've stripped actually looked better before than after. Guess it's just a personal preference with me that I paint my own armies.

For me its matching the paintjob to what I already have. I just traded for a bunch of painted Tyranids. A decent job was done on them. But, since they don't match the rest of my army, off they goooo....

On the other hand, if I could find somebody who could/would match my style. Well. I would happily give them more $$$/value/whatever.

On another (yet very similar) note: Painting services.

I can do locals for my "But I dont wanna paint anymore termagants!" needs.

But the thought of sending several hundred $$$$ worth of minis to some guy I have never met and having HIM paint them for me. I just can't do that.

Now if its part of a deal we are working on. IE you paint X # of marines for me in this sample mini style and I send you: Y, Z, W, and E minis for that. I can do that.

And now I will stop rambleing and go search for killer deals.

I'm a halfway-decent painter (about 6.5-7.0) and I rarely sell stuff here on Btown. Most folks are looking for killer deals here, so if'n ya wanna sell the painted stuff, try eBay or something...but even then you won't get a whole lot for it unless your Matt Verzani or something. There seems to be a threshold of quality where, unless you cross it, you get very little for your painted goods. Sometimes, a specialty site where serious gamers congregate is a good place because people recognize the value of a nice paint job. Case in point: I sell a lance of Battlemechs on eBay for $35, and then go sell a slightly better one on LordsoftheBattlefield for $120.

In my opinion, painted models are great to look at, but they are not something I would actually buy. I buy painted model strictly to strip them, as painting and converting is half the fun of warhammer. IMO painted models, GD quality or not, is worth about 50% of the cost, as I will have to strip them of their paint, which is not always definite, despite using Simple Green. Also, it's a lot of trouble.

Yes, I am one of the few that will not pay more than $50 for Magmatrak, no offence Boltman, but if I can't paint it, it isn't mine, and it will just be another paperweight.

I'd have to agree with you in general. I'm going to try selling off my skaven army. Its all lead and painted to a "good tabletop quality" standard for the bulk of the clanrats and the specials/commanders are painted better quality. I'm going to sell them off in lots of 30-40 to a squad, I figure this way you can pick up a full unit and it can be their brothers from the next sewer so if they don't match 100%, that's ok. I've got some 250 of these buggers to get rid of.

The nurgle palanaquin, however is stripped but an item like that will still need pictures since when they came out, they had 100 different variants.

Unless its a full army, a painted model ALWAYS has less value, for the simple fact that folks want to aquire models that match their army they already have.

Facts are, unless its absoluetly beautiful model, no one is buying it for the paint job, just the model.

Primed is usually ok, and is much easier to get off models.

I'm with you guys as far as painted minis go.
How ever having said that I have done one HUGE trade(army for army) and two completearmies painted that I have had no problem getting my s\asking price for.
I will say that my prices were reasonable for good quality table top.
(Pro painted is the most over rated term in use today)
I also supply pics of any painted minis I offer so paople can judge for themselves.
I can see what you pean about matching up paint jobs how ever;
maybe thats why I had no problems. I sold entire armies ready to play.
As for painting services and show quality pieces I have seen some beautiful pieces go on ebay for astounding prices.
I want gaming quaity so I never even entertain the idea of springing for 300 bucks for one mini...
