Since the payment for the second leg of the journey is pretty indirect, you end up with market inefficiencies like shipping in some cases from the us to Canada being cheaper than Canada to Canada, and every Chinese “epacket” you buy from aliexpress...

Mostly. Kinda sorta. When Canada, for example, raises it's postage rates, the US to Canada rates also increases.
