Yet ANOTHER increase??????????????????

Low and behold - breaking news:
It's almost June again, which means that Games Workshop
will be doing another price increase.
I just received word that the prices will be going up
between 5 - 20%.
For example, the Space Marine battleforce is currently
selling for $130, but will go up to $155 in a week.
That's it for me - BT is the place to be!!!!!

I've finally decided to give up on GW. I mean, I'll keep my old stuff for the most part, but new stuff is out except for maybe a new codex for my army or a new mini rulebook. (traded for on here of course) I just can't afford to play GW games anymore. Especially when there are sooo many interesting games that don't require me sell body parts to afford them. Also, GW's games have just gotten too big. I can paint a unit of 6 infantry for Warmachine and feel like I've accomplished something. Painting 6 figures for a GW game is a drop in the bucket.
That said, I don't dislike mass battles. I think that in the future they will just need to be smaller scale. If you have Facebook, check this out:

That's my next obsession I think.

I saw the pics of the Hawk Wargames stuff on FB the other day, and I almost sold on it just because the minis looked nice.
Not surprised that there is another yearly increase. I think the only way GW could shock with pricing would be to hold it steady. (I would have said lower prices, but I think that would actually cause the universe to implode or something.)

You know those minis are in 10mm, right?
Kool minis don't make a good game. The rules can be crap. You know like GW's where you need 3 other books to explain what they mean or to attempt to rebalance forces.
I just read the rules for a Game called Alien War. The dev/writer/creator is/was sending out prepub copies of the rules. It's an ok system for modern warfare for small scall skirmishes. The minis are ok, but nothing makes me want to run out and get the armeis. It's USMC vs modern Germans vs Bugs. The basic rules usmc vs Germans. The boxed game, is usmc vs bugs. Very reminicient of space hulk, space crusade and advanced space crusade.

Yes KT, I know they are 10mm. That's part of what makes them awesome. I want to ditch 28~32 mm for mass combat. I don't care for it any more. Warmachine is as big a game as I think I'd do at that scale.

Have you seen anyting of the rules or anything besides the look of the minis? Is it ground based, air/space based or a combination of both?
The models shown on their site looked like all vehicles, so it looks like an 'epic' scale game.

Ground based, there are infantry stands in the previews, with air support and air delivery of both vehicles and troops. No rules yet, but I can use the models with other epic scale rules sets if I don't like theirs.

I KNOW it was inevitable for them to raise prices. And there are some that would argue that their gas, food, utilities and other facets of life have already gone up, so why not entertainment?
My perspective questions the authority -
why? Why should we as players and collectors accept this? We are the ones that keep them in business folks.
Case in point: AoBr sets - great starter and perfect troop builder. Intro price was somewhere around $50.00 around these parts. About 8 months later - WHOOSH: $69.00. Within a year, BAM: $90.00!
Case in point: A 5% to 20% increase going into effect now.... The necron battleforce went from about $110.00 to $130.00 now, but the SM battleforce goes from $125-ish to $155? Sure, SM are the showboat army and the cornerstone of 40K.... but why the differentiation? Simple math - raise prices on what sells the best.
I know this boils down to greed somewhere at GW. And that
outrages me.
Sure, plastic is an oil-derived product in most cases and we all know oil prices are high. Metals of all types have seen rises in price as well. Resin has ingredients that are sure to include pricey chemicals to one degree or another; but for God's sake, why can't I count on a "solid" (only in reference to having been around for awhile now

) company like GW to understand it's a slap in the face to expect that I get "this" newest release of this codex or rules and "that" set of models for a price that i paid much lower for a year ago. Don't get me started on two or more years ago either.
I feel that as an individual, i have little sway over gas, utility, and food prices. But GW...
entertainment.... entertainment is what I have
FULL authority over.
Well, this "plastic crack" 'junkie is going cold turkey GW. Know that I trade on BT because of the FAIR trade value that is established between traders and players of your continued overpricing of this game.
I'll be keeping what I have now with no new purchases from your company and will gladly trade on BT for what I need in future, pure and simple.
Stick that in your quarterly projected sales from here on out
!!!!!

Interesting company from an investor's point of view. It has been fairly profitable for several years at this point.
They have made 16.1 and 15.4 million pounds (British Currency) in 2010 and 2011 respectively. Their dividend in 2011 was 45p (about 85 cents US).
Revenue slipped from 126.5 million pounds to 123.1 from 2010 to 2011. It looks like they are going to have an even better 2012 as they are at 62.7 million pounds with the Christmas season in this year's numbers. They don't keep a large portion of their profits, a 29p (about 56 cents US) dividend has been declared. That will eat up about 12.6 million pounds of their projected profit. The beneficiaries of those dividends are:
http://investor.games-workshop.com/shar ... tatistics/ and anyone else that owns GW's stock.
Quick access to their finances can be seen at:
http://www.google.com/finance?q=LON%3AGAW. The dividend numbers don't match the report, unless I'm missing something major in the conversion process.

I hate hearing about a price increase too, but this is a luxury item. The hobby is a luxury, and just like cars, you have less expensive ones and then the luxury automobiles. GW will continue until they price themselves outside of the market. Then they will either adapt their pricing to the marketplace or end up going bankrupt eventually.

or sue people for perceived copyright infringemnet. They spent more money 2 or 3 years ago on litigation than anything else. They usually win by threats, CaD orders or nasty letters from lawyers, and not actual court resoultions. Scaring the others out of business.
There was 1 game and company, I don't recall the names
, that actually beat GW and won the lawsuit. GW had to pay up big time. They had to pay all of the court costs for both sides as well as a judgment vs them. [and then raised prices out of the blue to cover it].
You can't copyright game mechanics. You can copyright terms or namess of said mechanics.
For example, M:TG used the term 'tap' to signify turning a cards 90 degress to show it was used. All of the other ccg companies had to use another term for this same mechanic, turning a card. They all use it, it's just called something else.
Also general terms, like turn, phase, round or sequence can't be copyrighted; since they are used in multiple applications.
