Important information for new members

If you are a new member or a member with a low rating:
1)LOCATION. Put in your location.
Its quite annoying to make a deal and discover someone is half a continent away. This changes the whole situation, as shipping can get very expensive.
2)PAYMENT. Payment before shipping.
If you insist on payment before you ship your items reguardless of trade references - please post so in your trade ads. It will keep myself & countless other higher rating members from wasting time contacting you. If you cannot trust someone with a rating in the hundreds, how can they trust you with a rating of 4?? Think about it...
Thank you.

FWIW,
1) Personally, I don't mind a half a continent away quite as much as I do a half a planet. LOL
2) While you are not required by Bartertown to ship before receiving payment if you are a low rated trader, you will find -as SS has indicated- almost no well established traders (the best kind of trader to deal with, BTW) who are willing to deal with you.

You know, I'm all for a rule stating that if you don't have your location posted, and you don't inform me of it before a deal is made; then a backout is acceptable.

Good idea Ironhide. It really only takes less than a minute to go and add your location. The whole new trader I don't mind sending first, but for money you must pay first boggles my mind. I definately steer clear of those traders.

How can a deal be made if you haven't exchanged addresses (etc.) and confirmed who's shipping first? Sure, you can have agreed to a price or trade specifics but, until all terms are agreed to, the deal isn't finished.

Agreed. Eric.
Earlier this morning I was going to go on about HOW can you have a completed deal if you haven't confirmed addresses? Until both sides of a trade have agreed to EVERYTHING, there is no backout, correct? At least that is how I always thought it was supposed to work. I have always railed against the backout forum because there was too much ambiguity involved. I still don't even look at the forum. I understand it's purpose and it is fine if you feel that that is important to look at when working with other traders. I just never saw it that way.
As for Starslayer's ideas, I thought that we were going to make it mandatory to put your location (real location, not like Linrandir's

) so that everybody could see it.
And I certainly second the idea of having EVERYBODY who is selling stuff to put in their posts that they only take payment up front. That way it allows the buyer a choice before they even start working out a deal. But, I realize that there is no way to do that. Maybe this thread will heighten the awareness for newer traders.

If you agree to buy or sell something then they just drop off the face of the Earth with no communication, I'd allow it on a technicality. That's about it, though.
Opting out because you can't agree on who ships/pays first? Nope. Who would be the one to be reported in that case? The one who refuses to pay first or the one who refuses to send first???
A deal's not done until every facet is agreed upon.

Easy,
Example:
Member A: My X for your Z, deal?
Member B: Deal
Member A: Here's my address
Member B: Your from another country??? No deal.
Member A: Your already agreed. *Quotes former PM* If you backout, I'm posting a backout on you.
A Bartertown 'Trade' occurs when both parties have agreed to a transaction, be it a purchase (ie buyer-seller) or exhange of items and/or services, and have agreed to the terms of said transaction.
If the location was not included in the terms that were discussed, and you agreed to the terms, a deal has been made.

And that right there is exactly why I don't like the backout forum.

Then I turn around and remove that backout report.
Shipping was not agreed upon, so no deal was finalized. Who ships first and where to is part of the "terms."
My removal of the backout would include an annoyed PM to both users involved to ALWAYS make sure that BOTH PARTIES know where shipping is coming from and going to at the beginning of the trade, so that issues like this don't arise in the future.

Unless someone put "Free Shipping" in their ad without putting a caveat on it saying "Only in the Continental USA". If it says "Free Shipping" in the ad, then it is a term that has already been set by the poster. If the poster didn't have enough sense to ask where the guy is from before agreeing; then he just screwed up. I cannot count the number of times I have seen people put up ads like this and then get roped into eating the shipping cost to Australia, China, or Brazil; just because they didn't have forethought to ask where the guy was before agreeing to the deal.
Seriously, we just need to change the rule to stipulate that locations must be given before a deal can be finalized.

But you didn't mention the "Free Shipping" in your original hypothetical.
In that case, I'd be in agreement, provided it didn't specify "within the US/Canada/UK/etc."
