Advice for a new 40k-er

Advice for a new 40k-er
I'm cosidering getting into 40k. What should I get to start? Should I buy the the Battle for Maccrage set? Should I just buy the rule book? Also, could use some advice for which army to pick. I prefer either a horde army, or the complete opposite(smaller # of strong units). Any suggestions.

Well, couple things I would consider. Do you already have a group to play with? If so, how many of them have the rulebook. The rulebook is a good buy, but if you have a friend you can borrow it from for a little while, that would be most excellent, and allow more early money twoards models.
As twoards army selection, a few things to consider is how you LIKE to fight. Do you like the idea of a sort of FPS style, few squad members tearing thru an army? Or would you rather have something a bit more "realistic"? Also, one thing to consider is what models you like the look of. Also, are you looking to paint them yourself, buy a painted army, or hire a painter to paint them custom for you. All of these things can influence your decisions.
Warhammer really isnt my primary game, so its difficult for me to advise you. I would suggest something that your going to like for the next little while, both in style, and in look, which is highly personallized.

Agree with the above. Figure out who your opponents are, and what army you'd like to play.
Start small and work your way up to a list that's good against all comers (or at least against as many as possible). This will keep the obscene costs associated with 40K down - a good thing, to be certain.

As far as what to get, get what looks appealing to you, aesthetically, and mechanics-wise (try to get access to the rules and/or bookks for the army you choose before you buy so you can see generally what each unit does).

If not, find one.
Go to your local Hobby or (shudder) GW store. Ask the manager/owner to show you some stuff. Ask them if they can hook you up with a group that has models already.
the opportunity to PLAY the army before you BUY the army is priceless. had I done that, I'd have skipped right over the Daemonhunters and gone towards Khorne!
GW has an area on their site that features game groups. You can search by area. Go there and find a group. it is how I found the one I am in now.
If you like Horde, Orks & Nids are best. if you like Firepower, Tau and IG are the best. If you like to Hit Hard, then Chaos & Marines tend to be the best. Then again, Nids can do all of that to some degree.
If you want to win... stay away from Dark Eldar (or, as we call them, Elves in Paper bags!).

The first thing you should get is the rulebook. Do not spend a dime on miniatures until you've got an idea on what kind of army you're going to use. Though, depending on where you live, you might want to head to your local store and ask for a demo game (GW stores usually have a table and models available for'em). It's a fun way to learn the very basics, and see how the game runs on a small scale. It's also a good place to meet other players and schedule games, once you've picked an army you like.
As others have mentionned already... make sure to pick an army you're gonna enjoy painting. It's probably the most challenging part of this hobby, and you're going to spend a LOT of time doing it, so it might as well be on models you enjoy.
