Not so much.

And how should we know why they do it? :P

Just saw this.
My best guess is that they simply don't read that part of your post. I don't use Paypal, and i clearly state that in my posts (multiple times and in all caps). But at least half of the responses i get involving money either ask 'u take paypal?', or just assume that i do. It's frustrating as it ends up wasting both of our times. My only conculsion is that a lot of people just search for key words in a post and ignore the rest.

Not hijacking

Post by MagickalMemories »

I'm not trying to hijack a thread here... just going on a tangent it naturally led to...
I don't use Paypal, and i clearly state that in my posts (multiple times and in all caps).
I'm wondering why not.

Unless you are below 18, it's simple to get PayPal. LITERALLY, all you need is an email address. Not to mention that it's totally free if you use a personal account.
If you have a bank account, you can attach it to PayPal so that the money can be transfered from PayPal to your regular account... or you can just use it from PayPal.

Not to pick on YOU, Ves. I wonder that about everyone who doesn't use PayPal.

I don't use paypal. Mostly based on principal, but I have many other reasons. I used to use them but now I won't use them for any reason.

If you can't write me a check or send a money order, then you really are one lazy human.

That's a fair question. I can't speak for anyone else, but my choice not to use PayPal was made a long time ago based on their actions and their terms of service at the time. I haven't read through the current terms of service (and i'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you (and 99+% of their users) haven't either...), so i don't know their current polices, but i was not happy with the old ones. I'm not willing to blindly signup and i have yet to assess their current policies. When i get around to doing that, i may change my mind about using them (doubtful, see below). As it is, i don't really trust them as a company.

That aside, one of the major problems i had/have with them relates to their ideology. Specifically, their policies towards adult items. Some time ago, they created a double standard with regard to 'normal' materials and 'mature' materials. From their current TOS: "You may not use PayPal in the purchase or sale of, or receipt of donations for, any obscene or sexually oriented goods or services." This effects many people i know who desire to sell such items on a small scale. I'm told this decision was due to religious/political pressure regarding 'morality'. Either way, i'm strongly opposed to these sorts of policies and i do not wish to deal with a company that supports them.

I am well aware that most people here do not understand/agree with my decision regarding PayPal, and that's fine. I'm also aware that there are people here that i can't do deals with because of my decision. And obviously i'm willing to accept that. I have nothing against people who use PayPal (though i've had some nasty comments directed at me from people here for my refusal to do so). To avoid wasting anyone's time, i try to make it very clear in my posts that i do not use PayPal. As i noted before, i'm not entirely sucessful at conveying that to would be trading partners...

Heh, I feel the same way about people that refuse to sign up for a paypal account. :P

Quite true.

Now, I'm going on the assumption here that "you" was a generic term, and not me personally. <G>
I have no problems with money orders, but i prefer PayPal.
My reasons for preferring PayPal are twofold
1) It's far faster than sending a check (remember, we live in an age where we're upset when it takes 2 minutes to Nuke a Hot Pocket). <G>
2) Fraud protection, to a degree. If I don't get a package from you, PayPal will rip my money back out of your pockets.

From Vesrian:
I haven't read through the current terms of service (and i'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you (and 99+% of their users) haven't either...)
Im in agreement with that, except where it mentions me. I read the TOS when I signed up and every update since then. NO WAY am I going to let myself fall into some pit for not reading 5 minutes worth of text. :D

Some time ago, they created a double standard with regard to 'normal' materials and 'mature' materials.
Now, I agree... and I think it's absolutely absurd that they won't allow it. I can understand that they don't want any online gambling related purchases, but the adult thing is too far.
(This next part is to beat people to the punch)
Why do I agree about the online gambling & not the adult items... I've been in banking for years and I can't begin to tell you how much fraud is generated by operators of dishonest gambling sites and people who use stolen information on gambling sites. It's enough of a headache that MOST banks will not allow debit card charges from these sites.
(though i've had some nasty comments directed at me from people here for my refusal to do so)
Now, that's just stupid of them.
To avoid wasting anyone's time, i try to make it very clear in my posts that i do not use PayPal. As i noted before, i'm not entirely sucessful at conveying that to would be trading partners...
Well, if you state it clearly, there's nothing further YOU can do.
I have a similar problem with PM's. I can keep track of emails easier and can get to them faster. I prefer to communicate via email. I ALWAYS put that in my posts when I'm putting something up for trade... about 1 in 10 people PM's me... I simply respond with a request that they email me & I give them my email address. Only about half of those actually email me... I always wonder about the intentions of the other half.

Anyway... thanks for responding.

I'm annoyed by those who insist on being emailed, and don't provide an email address or link to one in their thread!

Easy, fella, wasn't directing any accusations towards you.

Here's an example of what I mean:

viewtopic.php?p=2873&highlight=#2873

On the first line he asks to be emailed...but no email address to be found anywhere. :?
