Commercial Advertisers

Hello,
I would guess that this topic is not a new one but wanted to throw my opinion to the winds of Bartertown. I get a bit annoyed by the repeat posts on the boards by commercial sellers of figures, game books and cards. I frequent these boards and trade with other like minded gamers from time to time and I find the repetetive posts by commercial folks a real distraction. Yes...I know that I can choose not to read those posts, and believe me I do choose that. I feel, though, that their mere presence on the boards detracts from the spirit and intent of these boards. I understand the well placed advertisements via banners that we see on the site. My only beef is with those that use board posts to do their advertising.

Well...

Not sure what all I can say here. I certainly appreciate your voicing your concerns, but advertisers do have the right to post in our forums as a benefit to being paid advertisers. They help keep Bartertown functional.

Now, mycomplaint is people who operate businesses and try to fly under our radar by saying things like "these are personal sales" and such. I mean, c'mon now. But hey, sooner or later everything becomes apparent.

Abird, I agree with you in theory but Lin's right on this one. Without the support of the advertisers the site probably wouldn't exist anymore. It was one thing back in the day when it was Adam's college project but now it needs money to keep it going. As long as they don't abust the rules (by posting multiple times, etc) then they should be allowed to post. The only other thing I could think of would be to have a retailer section in the ads just for them.

I decided to speak up when an advertiser posted twice in three days (both were on the first page) and was severly rebuked by another member who chastized me for getting on to an advertiser (who pays for the site to keep running). PLEASE!!!!

I think it is silly to treat them any differently then any other trader. They need to follow the rules just like everyone else.

Thanks to them for advertising, but I, for one, have offered on many occasions to pay to be a member. Advertising is nice, but perhaps just as much, if not more, could be made with memberships. Or even better a small fee to post things. That would eliminate the double posting, the multiple posts and many of the problems I personally have.

And no - this post is not a means to bump up my total posts (as one member has accused me of). I was making light of a situation that I did not care for with those new members having such high total posts, with little to no trades on the Bartertown trading side of the website. I used it as a reference tool and now I cannot. I was disappointed, but I could give a flip less about my post total - unless someone is going to use it as a reference and then I care A LOT!!

Thanks to Bartertown!!
