Standard Trading Practices?

I noticed this at the bottom of a recent trade post and found it interesting:

"I follow standared Bartertown trading practices:
Lower rating ships first
Buyer pays before models are shipped"

The first sentence seemes to agree with the general sentiment among long time B-Town users.
However, the second does not, and seems to be an attempt to change what is 'standard' as far as trading practices here.
I just found it interesting that it would be phrased that way.

For myself, I think that it does not matter if you are buying or trading, so I will generally request that lower rated members ship/pay first.
On the other hand, I have no problems doing this if I am the low rated trader.

Thoughts?

This all falls on the whole Buying is not trading debate.

As for the trading practices in the sig line you have every right to ignore
These are not set in stone and can be changed at any time since it is a sig.
Simply put I can change what my sig says at any time, and if my PM references you following the rules set in my sig, then I change the sig you are bound by what is put there even though it is not the set of rules that you agreed on.

To clarify, it was in the text of the post itself.

Well, I guess if you decide to follow his personal trade rule, and he was the buyer; he'd have to pay first no matter what his trade rating is, because that is how his rule is written.

I have passed on several deals due to what I consider unreasonable demands from the posters of those deals. I try to just go with what is comfortable to me and use that as my standard. For instance, I tend to use the "lower references sends/pays first" thing when I make a listing and I stick to it, but if I am answering someone else's post I may do as they ask, or I might just give them a polite "no thanks" and move on. Bartertown is much like ebay in that NOTHING is really that rare and it will eventually come back up for grabs. There are exceptions I imagine (Dreamforge titans, prototype models, etc.), but for the stuff in my price range I can wait for a more enticing deal.

Ask ten traders what is standard, and you'll probably get 4 to 6 different answers.
As humans, we tend to be egocentric. Ask us about a particular subject, and our opinions will be interspersed with the facts, often without noting a distinction.
So, the fact that he calls that standard does not surprise me at all. For him, it *is*.

As for sticking to them... I recently passed up on a couple decks of cards from Paizo because the almost 0 rated seller wanted me to pay first.
No disrespect to that seller. They have the right to expect what they want. I'm just not going to do it, though, and passed on it - as I have with many other traders (and scammers)in the past. No ill will or anything... I'm just not going to do it.

I generally have started passing on demanding trade partners as well. It just isn't worth it anymore, and I find MORE people are getting demanding.

It depends how badly I want something. It I want it really bad I may break my own personal rules but I usually REALLY regret it, and am all stressed out until the trade competes.

I'm fairly new around B-town, but I have a lot of trades in during the past year..I've recently been getting a number of "buyers always go first" and I didn't realize that was the way it was. I actually have declined deals when they insist. That's why I have it listed in my sig. My opinion has always been what Blackspade indicated. I seems to be a mentality from eBay????

For the record, that's not "the way it [is]." It's "the way it [is] for that trader."
We have no rules regrding shipping order, regardless of trading or buying.

Buyer pays first? Rookies:
montaa wrote:I will have everything you own. Preference given to Warhammer Fantasy Items.

Trade conditions:

1. I'll buy up to 1% of retail value, but I only trade in semi happy thoughts. But you must feel guilty for making me work that hard.
2. You will send first, no matter how many years of work you've put in here at Bartertown. This is not even open to discussion.
3. When you package your models to send to me, you'll need to praise me at all times.
4. The only acceptable packaging is teak with gold hardware. Please polish the gold just before it arrives at my house on the Elephant litter, otherwise I will leave a negative reference.
5. You must include a packing slip that alternately lists the items you sent me written in powdered Unicorn horn, followed by a line of high praise directed at my awesomeness. The lines about me may be written in standard ink as no earthly substance is truly super enough to glorify my awesomeness.
6. When the trade is concluded you will leave me double positive feedback. You will enjoy leaving it and the moderators will leave yet another positive for me because they are so honored that I trade at this site.
7. The highest possible feedback you may receive from me is neutral. This is not a reflection on you, simply a reflection on how amazing I am and how glad you are to simply be allowed to contact me.
8. I only ship on Tuesday afternoons.

</grrrrr>

On the buyer thing.. when they ask me to send money first or even to send at the same time I simply tell them I've worked really hard for my references so I will send second. Simo sends I usually reserve for a gent that has within 50 or where I am at or its obvious they aren't leaving or having any issues.

You realize, of course, that you replied to a thread that was almost 3 years dormant?
