Here's the official announcement of them not renewing the license.
Also WotC has decided to make Heroscape into D&D.

It looks like there will be fewer pre-painted minis makers.

WotC has not supported the DDM game for a while now, as I recently discovered.
What seems unclear is whether or not they're still going to be creating the minis, but in a non-collectable way or modified in some fashion.
Going strictly with Heroscape as the only way to get prepainted minis for D&D would not be an intelligent move, IMO. It seems to me that offering "Adventure packs" of models would be smart.
Imagine it. Alongside the new module this month, they also release an "Adventure Pack" that contains all the minis you'll need to play that adventure.
Need an Orc Horde? No problem. We now have an Adventure Pack with 9 Orc Warriors and 1 Lieutenent. Buy as many as you need.
New for July: Stirge Swarm!
Oh, yes. These, I would buy.

Marketing Genius is generally not a term associated with the gaming world. There have been flashes, but rarely do coherent campaigns bring great success.

WotC is simply making a D&D version of Heroscape, so I don't see how that's bad. There's a Marvel Comics version of Heroscape, along with the basic version. Multiple versions can exist without problems, so it's all OK.

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!
Happy Birthday to me!!
Great, I only have one more SW Sourcebook to pick up from WotC.
Then I'll have to start all over again, when whoever takes it over.

IF someone else picks it up. It's an expensive license.

DDM isnt going anywhere. D&D heroscape is just a way to cut cost on a new set for its following. they mentioned economic hard times in the first link
i notice that the minis still fly off the internet store shelves and still cost out the 888, prices have went up on most older stuff worth looking at.
WOTC still supports the rpg mini line just not skirmish, skirmish is fun more rpg people should try it.
As i heard from a store owner who inhabits maxminis they are not continueing the visable packaging for the next DDM set (going back to random pulls). i dought they increase the minis perbox back to 8 though. the visable heros have been cancled aswell.
the last set savage encounters pulled the series back from complete minis ugly/uslessness. i really like most of the minis and find them usefull/greatly sculpted and on my gimme gimme list.
they tried the visable heros and they flopped.
rpg people would only buy one set of monster minis and thats not profitable as buying cases with loads of stuff you dont need.
as for star wars i dont play/watch crap(joke ;D
