myself i dont care, if you dont want to use the discussion boards, stay Out of them, thats the best advice i can give.
now to my opinions
concerning the trading section:
yes the ripping on peoples posts is not nice. but most of it that is done in the "trading section" is taken care of, i myself dont see much of it.
you might be getting on and seeing it shortly after its done, most of what i have seen i report to Lin and adam as others do as well.
Business is business, report the offenders, you want quick action get ahold of a mod (plug for insidious here).
over the years we have had alot of members in our community. you will get undesirables here and there, they will be dealt with when able.
people want to talk trash i refer them to the adult swim
but over all Business is business
but now about the discussion boards:
here my opinion is just another section of the store, i can see where people that dont want to spend alot of time online but have a favorite site, btown is one of my favorites, i am here almost every day.
if you dont like the discussion boards, stay out. others here do, thats why there is a section.
i think post count should count on here.
because most of the posters here that do have a high count are either mods or long time members and the vet members are usually helping noobs.
i have countless times posted advice on posting ads or whatever in other forums, or seen bitz people are looking for and let them know of other sources. do you not count this as part of the trading community by helping other traders?
the discussion board is also a place for us to give info to lin and adam for ideas to help b town prosper. i have been on here for a long time as well. "99" maybe even longer.
people on here talk ideas from army lists, to pricing on trades, to ideas on stripping figs, which all help b town and the hobby.
some of the other stuff belongs in the adult swim.
so therefore there is not one person in here that can consider post count not being part of a title. i dont think it ought to contribute even half, i have been thinking on a way and here is a little closer.
halve or quarter the post count and multiply the result by the trade rating
and a larger difference between title changes.
that cuts down a good bit for those that have a high post count but relatively no trade rating. and those that have high marks in both rewards them for furthering the community support (in theory)

You are right Eric. I do not patrol posts and try and find scammers, and I do not help new users on etiquette. I am glad that others do that, definately.
I just get very frustrated when simple posts for a trade get ruined by people wanting to just give their opinion. Sorry if that sounds bad, but I treat any reply to an ad that is not an offer, or question that could lead to an offer as off topic. It really keeps me away from posting more, instead I do a lot of replying via PM to others posts. So when I now see a reward, as in a title, for more posts, it kinds makes things worse from my perspective.
As far as contributing, my part is being a good, honest trader and finding those who are the same to create a transaction. I agree, that MANY other bartertown users do more to contribute to the site as a whole, but I have chosen my role on this website, and will do my best to stay true to being a good trader. That is all I claim to be....but right now, I think I'm still just a novice.

As others have stated, the particular choice of titles can be misleading as it seems to imply (particurally to someone new to the site) something about the person's trade experience. It adds confusion that doesn't need to be there.
At one end, you've got people who comment a lot but have a low rating so people might think "well his rating is only 4, but he is a 'expert trader' " (or worse, someone trying to leverage their title to mislead a person who might not know better)
At the other end, you've got people who trade a lot but post little. They have now been *officially* labeled novice traders. That doesn't seem like a good thing.
Again, it's all unnecessary confusion. I'd like to suggest that if titles remain, they be changed to something that doesn't imply anything about a person status as a trader. (perhaps a contest of who can select the best set of titles would be in order?)
Personally, I think titles in general are pointless. The post count gives the same information with more precision.

I follow the generally accepted practice that the person with the lower rating ships first.

NM77:
There's not a point in your last post I'd disagree with.. Well... maybe one... but not in a bad way...
I agree that spamming ads for anything that doesn't affect the ad is a pain. Inquiries about the items, questions like, "Are you willing to ship first?" Pointing people in the right direction for a bit or OOP mini they are looking for... These are acceptable.
"I see you are still trying to unload those Kroot!"
THAT should be taken to PM.
I'd hardly say you qualify as a novice, though. That title left you about 35 trades ago, at least!

...and, PLEASE, don't think that I take anything away from that. Obviously... if everyone posted and nobody traded... Well, the site wouldn't be serving its main function, now. Would it?As far as contributing, my part is being a good, honest trader and finding those who are the same to create a transaction.
...and it is a respectable role, at that. Obviously, you are good at it, too!!! The numbers don't lie.I have chosen my role on this website, and will do my best to stay true to being a good trader. That is all I claim to be....but right now, I think I'm still just a novice.

Lower rating? You ship first.

I think what this situation needs is some imagination.

Want my help with a BTR or backout? All messages sent/posted should be in CHRONOLOGICAL order. Otherwise, I just won't read it.

Here's the long story:
** Mod is a modification or add-on, not moderator.
You're right, your title should be based on your trade reference, not your number of posts. This is possible but it would require changes to be made to both the forums system (phpBB) and to the trade reference system.
The code which makes up the board has come into disrepair because of patch and mod slapped on top of each other willy-nilly. If I add more to it, I'm pretty sure it will break. It was my understanding that the forum system was going to get a massive update earlier in the year which would require me to start over no matter where I am. There's no eta anymore for that project and they continue to patch bits and pieces at a time.
I decided last week to start over. NO DATA WILL BE LOST (post counts, references, PMs, posts, all of it will be saved). I have a source control system, I'm going to put together some fancy documentation, it's all going to be very clean and very precise, I think all of the mods we have will stay.
How long? It should take less than two weeks is my best estimate to get back to here, I will keep you informed as to the progress. I've got all of the prep work done (which is what I was lacking in the past), tonight I'm going to start building.
As far as basing your rank off of your trade ref rating, that might be a month or so, I'm not sure what is included but I know it can be done.
If you guys haven't seen it yet, I finished the first run of http://www.warhammer40k.com/ Here is where you can discuss 40k topics in detail. It uses the same security as Bartertown so you can use the same username and password to log in. WHFB, Epic, Warmachine, etc. site will follow early next year.
