I agree though, that someone who NEVER shows one of the c.o.r.r.u.p.t traits in their life is a bit weird.

I'm a nice person, but I get reckless in my friend's go kart, often jaywalk on campus (C), and get ticked when paints don't work the way I want them to (T).

Or maybe I'll just hush :D

Well Magical, thinking rational or trying to rationalize this might have been my first mistake but I guess its almost like trying to figure out my poeple turn into serial killers, rapists, con-artists and what not.

*ahem*
Right. Back on topic (and putting the nomex gloves back on).

I think that in most cases scammers are just @$$holes who, like many other criminals, think they will never get caught. In some cases, though, we can see serious clinical manifestations of various mental disorders.
I'm not going to trot out the 10 hundred thousand arguments about the relationship between crime and mental illness, nature & nurture, etc - it's an old argument and not the place for it here.

Some of the more extreme examples of behavioral manifestation were displayed here by Ticknor, resorting to posting as other people to try and clear his name before he got caught again. The behaviors cited by the people who knew him combined with the demonstrated behavior on the forum, and his criminal record, all sort of indicate a consistent destructive pattern. He can't seem to help himself but to try and scam people with the same lines, etc.

Personally, I always enjoy seeing a scammer get nailed. But that's just me.

Actually, I find LoC's classification system to be far more useful for the types of organizations I work with. Dewey falls apart once the collection hits a certain size.

Bad-ass librarian, yes!
Mathemetician, no! (last time I checked, that number is just called a million).

But thanks for the backup on the psych argument. <Self-edited comment> Sorry Will... while I don't agree with you, you do have the appropriate background to have a legitimate opinion <end edit>

Ever read "Foundation"? It's hard (or impossilbe) to say what any one individual will do, but it's predictable what groups of people will most likely do. Very compelling historical fiction about the Roman Empire, but has some interesting points on the psychology of society as a whole.

Your starting point is all wrong to begin with. You are assuming normality and that something just clicked making them do bad things. More likely than not, they've been doing it to a small degree most of their lives, and getting away with the small stuff early and often has encouraged them that they can go bigger.

Like a small child, they push a little, and a little more, then a little more, wondering where thier limit may be.
None of these things are VITAL, this is a HOBBY. A hobby we enjoy, but still, a HOBBY.

Lower rating ships or pays 1st, myself included. Used to be more flexible; but was burned in recent months by a few newbies. If 200+ feedback w/no negs and 10+ years member is not enough to be trusted, well, like I said - none of this is VITAL.

You know what, being a cop, personally, I find a lot of this criminal psychology crap utterly useless and a bunch of mumbo-jumbo.

You know why people lie, cheat, and steal? Because they know they can get away with it, pure and simple. It's not because they were raised wrong, it's not because they were born in the ghetto, it's not because they think they're better than anyone else, it's not some deep rooted psychological defect, or any of that other psychology legalese stuff.

They do it because they know they can get away with it. They know that the American legal system for the most part is an utter joke, and even if they do get caught, little to nothing will happen to them.

Most stealers are repeat offenders who already have records. If I have one larceny, what's 3 more?

It's just like the average drunk driver drives drunk an average of 81 times before he is caught (according to FBI statistics). For me personally, I believe that number is higher. Why? Because with all those nice little glitzy anti drunk driving ads, what they don't tell you is how easy it is to plea bargain down a DUI, or skate out of one if you have a good lawyer. It's the system, it's designed to be broken, and it's frustrating.

People I arrest for shoplifting all the time HAVE the money to pay for the items, but just don't. Why pay for it when chances are you're going to get away with it should you choose to steal. And stealing for the most part is a choice, it's not that you're a true kleptomanic. Although I'm sure they do exist, I'd gather that they are less than one half of one percent of all theives out there. (and no, that's not an official stat, but rather from my own personal experience)

So why do people become scammers on here?? They know they can get away with it. Even when you corner them, call them out, and you might get your stuff back, chance are that these people will never, ever be procecuted, and that's the sad truth............
