Ummm advice please.

Post by Sixxer »

I did a trade online with a person whom will remain nameless at this time. We both agreed to pay for our own shipping and handling (I pay for shipping the things to him, and he pays when shipping things to me). His package showed up today and there were 29$ in shipping and handling fees. What is that all about. I have done a few trades on here, but have not yet encountered that.

Probably customs charges. If it came from outside canada and wasn't marked as a gift then you are going to be charged tax on it. What value was listed on the package?

Marking something as a gift avoids taxes if it is valued at $50 (I thinK) or under. Over that and they charge customs (and an extra $5 for the privilege of being charged customs).

I checked the canada post site for the actual regulations. $60 and under marked as a gift isn't taxed. $20 and under isn't taxed regardless (all in canadian dollars, all for stuff imported into canada). Now, thats the official policy, I'm sure they apply it whenever it suits them so some packages get taxed on a whim.

Also, if it was shipped via a courier other then the USPS/Canada Post there are often extra charges tacked on.
If I owe you a reference, please let me know. I accidentally deleted my PMs.

Yes.
There was a thread here, recently, that it happened when shipping via UPS.
Apparently, it was a really good rate, but the guy in Canada got SPANKED with fees (kind of like you just did).

Did you guys agree on shipping methods?
If you agreed to use regular mail and he chose a different route, he should (IMO) be responsible for picking up all or part of those fees.

Lower rating? You ship first.

I think what this situation needs is some imagination.

Then there is the part that will get you into a bind. Say you agree to place a low value on an item to avoid customs charges and the guy scams you. Wouldn't be too smart to report him and have to admit that you were in the process of doing something illegal as well would it?

Yeah, but who ever really claims the real value of an item when they ship it??

I think that one would fall under the same law as you can't videotape sporting events off of the TV without the "express written consent of the NFL/NBA/MLB"

Who in the hell is ever going to enforce that? Last time I checked, the video police never came to my door asking to see all my old Browns games and did i have the proper paperwork??

It would cost an infinite amount more to prosecute someone that it would be worth........
