what's the deal with the "PM'd you' replies?

Post by vesrian »

I've been wondering about this one for a while...
Why do people post a followup to an ad solely to inform the original poster that they have sent him a private message? The system can be set to inform you of followups to posts and also PMs. Are there a lot of people who have notication of one of those turned off, thus creating some kind of implied need to reply via all possible methods?

Seriously, i'm curious about this.

pm'ed you

I admit that I am one of those guilty. My question is why does it matter? Unless the person envolved complains. Not trying to start an arguement just wondering?

Sometimes it deters subsequent people viewing the thread from contacting the seller/trader offering goods because they think that the person that "pm'd them" has already struck a deal with that person.

I know if I see someone write "pm'd you" in a thread, it makes me think twice about contacting that person.

Never deters me. The worst that happens is a reply of "already traded away"

Sorry a second man. Seeing a "I pm'd you" means absolutely nothing to me. BTW I just realized that someone just Pm'd someone about their sale and you Insidious also Pm'd them. Not flaming or trying to start anything. Just observant...

I'm just curious. I didn't mean to imply that there was something wrong with the practice, but i've been wondering for some time why people do it. I assume that people have a reason for posting it, and i was just wondering what that reason was.

it could just be people trying to up their post count. you know, to seem more legit (although i don't really see that doing anything).

The way I figure it, it's just one more way to help ensure that you contact the member in question. It happens that sometimes people don't check their inbox or their email, but they DO check the thread they posted. It's wierd, but it happens.

As far as being a possible deterrent, deals fall through all the time so there's never any harm in contacting someone despite the string of "PM'ed you!" posts in their thread.

I'm one of the guilty here as well. My reasoning (and it may just be me) is that with B-Town being *cough* somewhat reliable *cough* as of late, I want to make sure the message gets through. In fact, I had a message disappear from my inbox just last week. Had there not been a post, I would never have known that they tried contacting me.

Also, some people never check their PMs and want you to e-mail them directly, yet forget to post such. If I see something I really want, I want to get in there early and try to strike up a deal.
