What painting services work with barter?

Post by Imaginos »

Okay, just feeling things out here. What painting services do you know of that work with barter? I have a hard enough time convincing my wife that I should spend money on miniatures. Now if I told her I was going to buy some miniatures and pay someone to paint them for me, I might well come home to find my beloved hobby items roasting in a burn pit. So, I'm looking at seeing what painting services will work with barter (ie. I trade minis, they paint other minis). Ideally, I'd trade some of my Warmachine / Hordes stuff, they would buy and paint some specific 40K / WHFB stuff.

So, what painters work this way? Also, to keep things loyal here, I'm only asking about Bartertown advertisers. If they don't advertise here, I'd rather not hear about them here.

Hi there,

So far, I have only dealt with one painter who was interested in doing a barter-for-paint service, and it was for some very specific mini's from their "wants" lists. Just to make sure we are thinking the same thing (I think we are), I sent a batch of items to the painter, he kept the pre-determined portion for himself, and then painted and returned the other portion of the mini's. I have worked with him 3 times and it has been fine each time. However, since this is not a "for money" venture for him, my painting goes to the back of the line if a paid commission comes through. We discussed this and it was ok with me, so no big deal.

I have seen a couple of the advertising paint service people with trade lists in the past, and I imagine they would all give paint service credit for items on their lists if you ask. Heck, time=money no matter how you cut it, so it never hurts to check.

If you want I can pm you the studio that I have traded with, but I imagine if you just do a quick thread search of the studios you are interested in for "wants" lists, that will get you going in the right direction.
Always remember that your stuff is nearly worthless junk. The other person's items are highly valuable collectibles.

If I owe you a reference, please remind me.

I don't expect people to wait forever for an answer, and expect the same courtesy.

I have done this type of service in the past, and yes it was for specific wants, though a couple of times the offer was worth it as well. However this is not a common type of commission taken as statistically a client doesn't have what the painter might be looking for. For some painters, the idea of sticking a bunch of "un-wanted" models on their shelf doesn't sit very high on their lists. Still, it does happen, but it falls into the category of the moon lining up with the planets in just the right angle...

Just my 2 cents though.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I've never used a painting service, so didn't know if this was common or not.

I believe [Admin edit - non advertiser] will take some models, depending on their condition. I'd suggest giving [the owner] a call or dropping an email for the details.

I've never worked with [that painter], just follow their Youtube videos, but they seem like a very solid choice.

If you don't have your Location listed, take a second and update it!

-I respond within 48 hours unless utterly incapable. Please do the same. Any offer I make stands for that long as well.
-Lower rating? You ship/pay first. Same goes for me.

'How Much for...?' messages will no longer be replied to at all. I've been nice about it, now I'm done.
