Apartment Fire

Post by HarlequinZero »

Hi all,

Just to let you know, I probably won't be able to post much for the next 4 or 5 days. The apartment next to mine had a fire, (dippy left some appliance on while he went to work,) and while it didn't do a lot of damage to my place it did get hit. My storage closet got gutted. This means all of my wife's and my summer clothes and bedding got torched and about 95% of my unbuilt minis. The closet is in the bedroom so that room got a lot of smoke damage as well as some water damage from the fire department putting the damn thing out. Also, the lovely odor of melted plastic now permeates my entire place.

Thankfully it only hit the stuff it did, but it's going to set me back about $8,000 dollars in models that I've collected over the years and you KNOW the insurance company isn't going to cover all of that. :-x The saving grace is that last summer I bought two of those cheap Ikea display cabinets and put all my painted stuff in there so it didn't get hurt because it was in my living room.

The insurance people are here now checking things out and my wife and I will stay at her folks' house tonight as the smell is horrendous. (Go, go burnt GW plastics...) Tomorrow or the next day a company that cleans up after fires is supposed to come and clean out the closet and bedroom and deoderize the place.

As such I'll probably be out of my place for the next couple of days and only have internet access via my iPhone. (Which I will be checking here as I'm an addict and can't help myself.) I can post by it, but it's not ideal so unless something big comes up I'll be reading just to keep up, but not posting.

The two people I'm currently in trades with I'll be PM'ing.

HZ, sorry to speak for you there, but I think you'd be okay with me asking this of Arma on your behalf...

HZ,

I too wish to express my condolences about this tragic event.

At least you and your wife are OK that is much more important then some little toy soldiers.

Hopefully they will get the damage and stench taken care of sooner then latter.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. I'm back at home. The stench and smoke is all gone thankfully. Just a large wound where my closet used to be.

Don't know anything solid about the insurance yet. Supposed to have a meeting with them on Monday to discuss particulars about the claim.

Anyways, I'm back on B-Town.

Well i guess that is a bit of good news among it all.

I am sorry to hear about your losses. My heart sunk as I read it. I hope you get close to actual value from insurance.

I'm new to Bartertown but have had some success here so I figures I throw in my 2 cents....

Having had some experience w/ neighbors and fires, I can relate. We didn't loose anything but still a nightmare to deal with.
Why not post a "Magical Wish List" of some of the mini's you lost and maybe some of the users will send them along. I know my collection is VERY small, but would be more than willing to send anything I have along to get you back on your feet. So to speak...

Just a thought....

Good luck.

Thanks for the thought, but the insurance came through pretty well for me. The Japanese insurance companies aren't the penny pinching posterior orifices I'm used to from the good 'ol USA. (Sometimes I miss home, sometimes not so much.)

So long story short, I got most of my money back and used it to restore a good chunk of my minis. There's a few classic gems that got lost, (the MIB Mk.I Land Raider was probably the worst,) but for the most part my rarities are kept in a cabinet next to my painting desk so most of the stuff I lost was replaceable.
