PM sent............. Why?????
What purpose does posting a reply of "PM sent" serve(other than annoying the hell out of me)?? The site let's you know when you have a PM.
If I owe you a reference, please let me know. I accidentally deleted my PMs.

I hate this more than anything (and it's new cousin "PM and email sent") and no offense but I don't buy the bookmark argument. The sent PM is itself a perfect record of who you're dealing with, and if you paste the ad into the PM you even have a running record of that. I often think it's just people trying to pad their post count for whatever reason but that's jusy my conspiratorial mind at work I suppose. The system already tells people they have a message and you can even set it to email you that you have one. I just don't see then need for cluttering up the lists with useless posts. Again, not trying to flame anybody, just my 2 cents.
The believer is happy, the doubter is wise.

I have never taken a post of "PM sent" into account for any of my posts. I go throug the PMs and look for the best offer. I know I have PMs from the pop up the site generates, the message that says "you __ new messages", and the email sent to me.
All that "PM sent" does is make me check an ad I already checked or hit "mark all posts as read"(sometimes I call the poster a "prick bastard" or something to that effect before doing one of the above mentioned things).
When I write someone a letter, I have never and phoned them to say "I have written you a letter" and nothing else.

Perhaps this is the one reason I really do not like "PM sent" posts. I have often wondered if people stop looking if they see a few of these posts. I know I have sometimes not bothered to make an offer if I see two or three of them.Anglacon wrote:well, truth to tell, I always say "PM Sent" for one main reason.
It is a way of me calling "Dibs" on said item!

well, that is the last time I try for levity here...
Anyway, I thought it was proper "Forum ettiquite", as I saw nothing but those responses when I started here....
But now that I know it ticks some of you off... well, I will make sure I make the words BOLD when I do it in the future!
(JOKING people.......)

/ok, guess I have not given up on levity!

no offense taken... this is a good topic really... i think it just comes down to the old saying... different strokes for different folks. It's like why some people have a pre-emptive thanks when asking a question while others wait till someone has answered and thank them accordingly. There is no "right" way to do this... it just depends on your own style.
I use it as a bookmark for 2 reasons. One to find the original thread again ... it is really easy to search and seen all the threads you're looking at... the 2nd reason is when I'm dealing with people that has hundreds of things for sale/trade. As bartertown rules, they cant make a new trade thread within a weeks time..but a week is a long time and tons of things may have already been moved. The seller usually just updates the thread. If I've posted in it then I can quickly recall it and see the updated list. I dont care for post count as it really has no merit in a board like this. The reference is much much more important.... you can have 20000 posts but with a 0 reference... you still ship first

This carries no weight at all - you can have Bartertown email you when you receive a PM as well. The PM Sent message is annoying. DUH - if you hadn't posted that I NEVER would have seen that pop-up right in front of my nose that says there's a PM waiting. The reason i put PM sent

Writing 'PM sent' is no more annoying than writing 'hey, I'm interested in XYZ.'
I really don't see the issue people have with it, honestly. I think some of you are being a bit nit-picky.

Actually the post count does play a role in your Bartertown name, you can't get to a certain point without enough posts.
That aside, as a member of the watch, I dislike them because I automatically go to check those to make sure there are no threadjacking problems or posting issues, which takes time just to read PM'ed ya.
As a member of the Bartertown community I have no problem with them, they serve as another layer of information flow, therefore could be helpful to some people.
I have often not gotten notification of a PM, but gotten notification that someone had posted on my ad. This is gotten much, much better since the switch, but for those of us who have been here awhile, we know that servers are fallible and another layer of information is a good thing.
I agree with the post that stated, TOmato or toMAto, certain things work better for some people than other things. If it works for you - go for it!!
