Big Brothers Big Sisters Charity Event

Post by MagickalMemories » Sun Jul 21, 2019 10:09 pm

EDIT: I am no longer in need of help. Thank you BT. This should now just be considered an informational thread until I can get a write up done on it.

Bartertown, I'm asking for help.
Anything that anyone can do will be FANTASTIC.

I've been thinking about this for DAYS, and wasn't sure whether or not to post it. But, as I taught my kids... people are generally good and want to help; you just have to have the courage to ask. So, I'm asking.

I'm looking for donations. And I need them in my possession by 8/1!

My gaming group is running a "Paint and Take" event for Big Brothers Big Sisters on Saturday, 8/3. We're hosting 12 matches (12 "Bigs" and their paired "Littles"). Our desire is to do something nice for these people, and to hopefully help grow these hobbies that we all love so much by showing how much fun they are and how good the people who are involved with them are.
We are having it at a local, well known hobby store who thought they could reach out to gaming companies for prize support.
That fell through (Not the fault of the company, BTW).

Between our budget and some support I managed to receive from a MAJOR GAMING COMPANY (Details will be provided when I do a full write-up after the event), we'll be okay. We'll have a great event.
But I don't want it to be great. I want it to be GREAT.

Our initial budget was $1000 that we put together, as well as the time & energy we're spending on the event. We'd planned on buying a bunch of pizza and drinks with it, and spending the rest on gift cards to give out to participants. We were hoping to have free raffle prizes from the donations the store thought they'd get from gaming companies. Right now, all we have is an undetermined amount of donations from the store itself (I don't have a list yet, so don't know precisely), and a little extra from what the MAJOR GAMING COMPANY sent when I reached out to them myself. The store is, apparently, not having any luck with the companies.
It looks like we're going to spend part of our budget on raffle prizes, leaving less for the gift cards.

This is where I ask for any help you can offer. If anyone here can help, please PM me.
I only have two limitations I have to follow, for obvious reasons:
1) All items MUST be family friendly. As much as I'd love to get some GW Daemonettes, the boobies would make it a "no go" item... but I'd gladly sell or trade those for something I CAN use, if you really want to donate them.
2) Items have to be NIB. I can't really giving away a bunch of loose items to people who are ALL new or nearly new to gaming, and won't know what they're getting. You know?

I don't care if it's paints, brushes, hobby supplies, miniatures, rulebooks, novels, or what the game system is... Anything new that you want to donate will be HUGELY appreciated.

My preference is that you also volunteer to cover shipping. I'll try to help, if you really need it, but anything I pay in shipping comes out of our budget. So... I'm really hoping for some generosity from you guys.

For anyone who donates ANYTHING, I offer this:
HERE IS THE BIG ONE:
1) ANYONE WHO DONATES MORE THAN $40 MSRP OF NIB ITEMS GETS BT+ FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR.
ALREADY A BT+ MEMBER? WE WILL FIGURE SOMETHING OUT.
2) A reference from me. It will be glowing and it will be original for YOU, with some humor, and not some cookie cutter BS. It might take me a while to get around to it, depending on how many generous souls are out there, but you'll get the ref.
3) Your User ID and, if you'd like, real name will be immortalized. The entire event will have a write-up (with pictures, if I'm allowed to take them by BBBS standards), and everyone who donates will be named. I won't list what everyone gave because, if you "only" donate an OOP blister of models (which I'll gladly accept), I don't want anyone to judge you negatively for that generosity. But if anyone REALLY goes out of their way, they'll get listed at the top "thank you" slots.

Thanks for reading this far. I look forward to hearing from some of you!

Note:
Updated the text of the OP a bit, just to clarify a couple things that might not have given the right idea.
The store where we're holding the event has been very helpful. I think the gaming companies are just having tight purse strings right now.

I...
I'm amazed.

I have received a LOT of messages from you guys, offering all kinds of help.
Thank you.

If anyone still feels like they "need" to help, we will be grateful, but I have to say that with the store we're using, Reaper, and the people here all being so generous... we're already going to have a great event.

Somehow I'm just seeing this now- hit me up when you do the next one, I have a box of things I can send along!
Do I owe you a trade ref? Remind me- sometimes I forget!
Awaiting trade refs from: tristym, yazaran

If you don't have your Location listed, take a second and update it!

-I respond within 48 hours unless utterly incapable. Please do the same. Any offer I make stands for that long as well.
-Lower rating? You ship/pay first. Same goes for me.

'How Much for...?' messages will no longer be replied to at all. I've been nice about it, now I'm done.

Two updates:

1) I changed the thread title. In addition to the generosity of my game group and the store hosting the event, the outpouring of support from the "MAJOR GAMING COMPANY" that sent us a bunch of paint kits and you guys mean this is no longer a plea for help, but an informational thread.

2) I got an email from my BBBS contact last night. Over the weekend, we hit capacity. We even had a small waiting list.
Because of the "MAJOR GAMING COMPANY" being more generous than expected and the way Bartertown showed up, I was able to add in two more Matches to the event. We will now be holding it for 28 people!

Thank you Bartertown. You're the best damned gaming community on the Interwebz!

I'm going to close this up for now, with a big thanks to all of you who helped.
The event went spectacularly, thanks to you all, even if not without hiccups. LOL

I'm writing something up on it, but have been sick for almost half of the last week, and barely even poking my neck in here.
Thanks again!
